Anyone else have difficulty 'reading' thier car's dipstick? On mine, there always seems to be oil tracked way up the stick when it withdraws, and it's often difficult to see exactly where the level actually is, especially when the oil is fresh. This happens when wiping and re-inserting etc (oo'er eek )

Sorry - no problems at all. Are you checking when the engine is stone cold i.e left overnight?

I know what you mean. the oil does coat the sides as you pull it out but there should still be a line across on both flat sides of the dipstick, albeit at differing levels!

Just choose the side with the marker.

I find the level line is usually clearer on the back of the stick, i.e the other side to the marks. You should be able to get a decent reading within 10 minutes of engine stop.
