I have read every thread regarding oil, but I'm still unsure about which to use. There's an awful lot of contradiction in the forums and also between various specialists. I've only had the car a couple of weeks and cannot vouch for what it is running on. I believe it has Mob 1 0/40 at the moment and is emitting a moderate cammy sounding tick at med - hi revs. I know it could be a multitude of things, but using elimination, i thought I'd try an oil change for something thicker. The range of answers I've had has been vast. Either, "yep, you definatley want a thicker oil to close the clearance gaps - 15/50 or 10/60" to "Mobil one is the one to use, although you'll be fine with a 10/40 semi synth".

Thing is, if I swap a 0/40 for a 10/40, the oil is no thicker when warm is it? So that can't be a solution????

If I put a thicker oil in, is there any possibility it'll fill any clearance gaps?

I'd like the voice of experience, rather than people trying to flog me what they have instore at the time!!!

Any help would be most gratefully received.

you are right there has been a huge amount said on this topic, I'm sure you've seen the thread mentined above which is full of knowlegable comments but can be contradictory. The RV8 was designed in the 50s/60s with older thicker oils in mind and although granted the oil pump has been radically improved the internal oilways and hydraulic tappet layout etc are all basically unchaged. Stick to a fully synthetic 10/50 or 15/50, such as Mobil 1 motorsport and you will be giving the engine as much protection as you can. Its not a panacea for all ills and peolpe will agrue day and night about what is the best oil at the end of the day just get one of the acknowledged suitable oils and it'll be fine.

My 450 rattles with Mobil 1 0w/xx , but now shes running 10w40 shes nice and quiet and oil pressure is up a bit too. Confirmed this with Perry at the v8 centre last time I was in a few weeks back - I asked him what oil he was putting in nowadays and its 10w something (40 I think) and we both nodded sagely at his comment of 0w/xx making the RV8s a bit rattley...

So you'll now know you need a fully semi-synthetic mineral oil of 0W40 AND 15W50 viscosity.
