Hi chaps, first question of many

I have a bit of a whine coming from the rear of the car, it's been looked after well, I'm not 100% it is the diff and may just be a drive shaft, I won't know until I get my mits on it from Monday for sure. I can't complain with what I'm paying for the car.

If it is the diff, I'm just wondering what the donor company/vehicle is should an oil drain and refill not sort it out.

Is it a jag / rover / or Granada set up? scratchchin

I'm going to change all the fluids in the car asap anyway, it hasn't been used much so a good old fluid change won't harm.

Thanks in advance folks.

Mike.

i bet you have the GKN unit if the noise is because of worn bearings(large finned rear cover)i think there crap i would be a lot happier if mine was the ford unit, because of this mine,s coming out over the winter for a rebuild, unneccesary in my opinion seeing as it as had proper care & oil changes, the other diff from is from the sierra cosworth and take a right spanking with or without the oil changes when they were fitted to the RWD sierra cosworth, and no im not a big ford fan(but they can build a diff),now i know the chims got more torque....but every chim i have driven with a whinning axle as been the GKN unit, one had only 53k thats rubbish.back to your car i would recommend an oil change 1st,did not work for me though, good luck,if your not sure get an indy to give you a second opinion, sorry about the rant.

Mine's a BTR and it whines. It whined when I had the car with 18k on it, and it whines just the same now at 59k. I have a spare, which is about 1500 miles old and that's silent. Then again, it is sat on the kitchen floor

trouble is mine has not got worse either Pup and im going to have the right hump if when i get it stripped theres nothing wrong with the bearings, when i drained the unit there was no nasties in the oil,but i dont like noises like this i dont beleive its something you should have to put up with,i mean its not 1930s engineering, you only notice whine with roof up,and theres no way i would have put up with that sound when paying 30k or whatever they were new,so i beleive its fixable.i am counting on the pinion support bearings worn, these are generally the faster wearing bearings anyway.i will let you know how i get on inc silverback mike when its done.thanks for feedback pupp so im not on my own,not pinching your post by the way silverback, anyone else have some feedback on these units?

That's ok mate, no problem. I'm the same really, it isn't supposed to whine so everytime I get into it I'll no doubt make a mental note to " get that diff off and have a gander inside..."

First thing though, oil change and keep my beady eye out for metal filings.

Pupp, whats a 'btr' version? Sorry if I'm a little thick.

Bloody 'ell, typical tvr, I haven't a clue which unit it is.
My old 390se used a jaguar set up, and I must say, no diff noises at all, tight as a tight thing that one was.

There were three diffs that i know of,fitted to these cars, firstly the GKN,then came the Salisbury, then the BTR.Diff type wasn't dependant on model engine size.I would expect you to to have a GKN on a '95 car, outside chance a Salisbury. The Salisbury and BTR i've had, have both had the manufacturer written on them. The GKN has big fins,if that helps.I had a Salisbury on my late '96 Griff, and a BTR on my '00 Griff.

Excellent, thanks Mike.
Still up for a meeting/chinwag at some stage? As you can see I decided to go for a chimaera.

Yep,looking forward to itbeer.Forgot to say,the Salisbury is also identified by having a nightmare filler location,at the top of the casing above the filler at the rear,a real P.I.T.A. to get at!.
