I'm using Falken FK451s which have been fantastic. They are not made any more, now superceded by the FK452 but I have been told these are just as good as the 451s.

FK452s are a big improvement on the 451s, I've had both (although not on the TVR)

You'll usually find that if they have the size you want, www.falkentyres.co.uk are the cheapest place to get them.

yes Yep - very impressed with mine so far.

Hmm, only if you're the type of person who does "dry miles only" as the car adverts sometimes say.

I managed to get some FK451s and am extremely impressed with them - www.falkentyres.co.uk still had some on special recently in some sizes. I have heard really good things about the 452s as well although apparently they are not as good as the 451s on track if that is a consideration.

Ive been using 451s on my luke warm saloon cars (Vectra V6 and BM 328i) 225/45/17s for years and have found them excellent. Now that the 452 has superceeded it I have a pair on the front of the Vectra and my impression (having got to about half way through the tread) is that they have noticably more lateral grip and have made the handling less understeer dominant (FWD) (with the 451s on the rear) which has been a bonus. Ive not tried them on the TVR, using Toyo Proxes T1S and now T1R, I doubt that the Falkens wound be a match for the Toyos in terms of grip, but I expect they would last longer.

Toyo's, I've been thinking about R888's, are they really that bad on the road?

They're effectively a cup tyre, so you are trading wet weather grip (or rather resistance to aquaplaning) and tyre life for dry grip.

If that compromise is acceptable to you then the R888 is brilliant, I hear, but you need to tread very carefully in the wet.

Obviously else you wouldn't have been sad enough to dig this 2 month old thread up to comment on it!

I know especially as I've got my own post on the same subject going too. It's just one non-stop rubber and tread talking party round my gaff, I can tell you.

I've got Falken 451's on the back of mine as well and they are good, start to lose it a bit after 20mins or so on the track but do recover fairly quickly as well. Yet to try 452's but if progress is what they say it is, how can they possibly be worse ?
R888's are brilliant in the dry, good in damp but pants in the wet, horses for courses and all that. There are quite a few options available in 24.45.16 as either Z.W.or Y rated but nothing other than SP9000 that match for the front as well, probably not even them for much longer either.

I love tyre debates too!

These last 2 posts have been great reading! and very timely as I'll be ready for all 4 new tyres in the next few thou. I had SP9000's on my VR6 a few years ago and might go for them, Veeeeeery tempted to get R888's as I don't drive in wet unless I get caught out, and then I could just drive like a granny.

I have a mate with the Proxy's and we both did a track day recently (I'm on SO3's) and he had much more understeer on his car. Both were 70% worn and warmed up.

I like the idea of a spare set for track days as TVRBob has, but getting a spare set of rims without paying £100+ per is proving difficult. I'd hate to have to put some aftermarket rims on, I always though they make TVR's look, well, not good. I'd love to have an extra set of 500 rims if anyone knows where I can get some :-)

Not really knowing much about tyres is a Falken 452 a super sticky tyre? The Potenzas on the back of mine have gone and would like to get a sensiblish predominantly road set of boots rather than a trackday special. Would the Falkens suit my needs or should I try something else?

P.S. Assuming mine's on 245 45 16s being a '98 500

Thank you Zippee but really trying to find out what kind of tyre the Falken is. Ie. is it a tyre like the Bridgestone Potenza S03 (in other roads a road tyre) or more the kind of boot that suits those with a track day bent? If it is a bit more focused (and hence has less life in it) then frankly I'm not so keen. How does it compare?
