If you have an automatic battery conditioner with crocodile clips, can it be modified to connect to a cigaretter adapter i.e. using an old cigarette adaptor from another device? Should this idea be marked as ludicrous and binned?

Cheers.

maplins sell the plug for about £1. The idea has been around for years. See the bibles. Only limitation is the plug will only handle about 5 A current so OK for a conditioner but not for a big charger. Check the polarity though as some cars had it reversed by mistake and that it is permanently live. Some cars had it switched on the ignition.

I have the conditioners attached to the garage rafters and have drop down leads that go through the open window into the socket.

I bought a battery conditioner from Halfords,it's made by Draper,I think it cost about £15.I cut off the crocodile clips and replaced them with a cigarette socket from Maplins.Make sure you check the polarity and solder the joints and insulate them.

Sorry guys - I think I've mislead with my original query.

I have a conditioner / charger that has crocodile clips. Can I, remove the crocodile clips and solder on a cigarette lighter attachment?

Cheers.

Yes you can, but don't solder it on (yet!)

Have a look and see how your crocks are fixed. They may just be pushed into female spade connections. If that's the case (as mine was) just pull them out and fix your lighter plug on a short length of suitable cable and put suitable insulated male spades on the ends to connect to your charger.

Keep you crocks somewhere safe. That way if ever you need to charge the battery on your other car/ bike/lawnmower you can just reconnect the crocks.

if you operate a battery conditioner, do you have to keep the windows open?
