Gearbox noise at low revs
Discussion
I've been meaning to ask...
My 99 500 g/box makes a rather nasty noise at low revs under load. I have asked a gearbox specialist to have a listen and he said is was probably a resonance.
Everything seems to be ok, but below 1800rpm it grinds like a good'un. It will do it in all gears although you have to drive along with the brakes on to hear it in 1st and 2nd. Above 1800 revs I would say it is bang on.
Has anybody else had this??
Many thanks,
Nick

I had something similar. Try holding on to the gear lever when you accelerate through the gears. Does it persist? If not, it is likely to be (like mine) that the gear linkage had got sloppy, and was vibrating under hard acceleration. It was fixed at my next service, but still does it from time to time.
Yours, if it is truly a grinding noise may not be this. Mine was a deep loud rattle.
Before I found out about the above, I also had the gearbox oil changed, which made a big difference in overal smoothness and slickness of the gearchange. You may want to try this first before signing up for major surgery. Cost me about £15.
