Selling Chim - test drive
Discussion
This isn't just a blatent plug.
I'm looking to sell my Chim after 4 loving years, what I'm wondering tho. is when someone wants to take my car for a test drive, should I let them (obviously with me in passenger seat) but bearing in mind they are unlikely to be covered fully comp and a good chance they won't have driven a TVR before!!!
However if I tell them they can't take it for a drive, there's not much chance of finding someone to buy it!!!
What do you think?

I would re-iterate part of that thread that wasn't highlighted as much as it probably should be.
Ensure the test driver has insurance. Fully comprehensive.
The www.dayinsure.com web site is designed just for this: 10-20 quid to give peace of mind to both sides.
If they baulk at paying this, then they probably aren't serious about buying a TVR. You can always show them how the car performs and then offer them a test drive, AFTER printing out the covernote.

Sometimes a short pottering test is all thats needed.
Ie, 500 yard run down a quiet wide open ind.estate road, just checking brakes, clutch bite, steering, all things that you can't get a feel for through someone elses driving.
If I wanted a proper drive after that knowing it felt good and wasn't hinding a shagged clutch or steering that pulled etc, knowing it was the car I probably wanted, I'd insure it fully comp and have a proper drive from cold.

Hi Ian
If i was looking (and I am but don't tell husband yet!) I would be quite happy to arrange insurance as long as you told me on the phone before I came to look, esp if I was coming a fair distance. I think its entirely reasonable to ask, esp if they have never driven a TVR before. However if they have driven a TVR before then a potter down a quiet road on 3rd party would probably be ok. I would then have the car checked by an 'expert'! anyway. S

I bought a 450 in October, my first TVR.
Went to a dealer and the wife test drove a 4.0 and that was it, "we’re having one of these I was told!!" Huge grin on her face when she pulled back on to the forecourt!
Bought the 450 privately and the seller took me out for a good 45 mins, think it was a good excuses for him to give it a good drive, he offered me a drive and I refused on the insurance front. The car was immaculate and even as a passenger I got a good feel of the car.
I got some insurance and went back the next day with banker’s draught in one hand and a faxed copy of my cover note in the other, so the seller knew I was serious about buying the car, only then did I take it for a test drive. Not having driven a TVR before the drive with the seller on the previous evening gave me a much better indication and feel of what the car was really like than my potter down the road.
If anyone is serious about buying a TVR then they will have no problem either getting insurance or just sitting in the passenger seat, other wise tell them to go to a dealer and pay dealer prices
