Electronic alarms can be quite sensitive. When you reattach the battery terminals, do it smartly (one quick movement), to avoid an intermittent supply to the alarm as you make the connection. Also, is the battery fully charged? If not, that can cause the same kind of effect.

the battery is new and fully charged the alrm sound is very faint, perhaps disconecting and quickly relacing the connections should be my next move to see if the alarm resets itself

I had a not too dissimilar problem with my Griff after a flat battery was changed. The petrol pump primed but the starter motor would not turn over. The rescue guys said that after the battery had failed the immobiliser went in to some kind of 'spasm' where not even the reset button would work. By 'jumping' the starter motor (rather than the battery), he said this sent a signal back to the immobiliser circuit and cleared it. I find it hard to believe but he had done it before and it worked on my car! Maybe try this?
