Hello,

On the way to work this morning my Speedo stopped working (or at least that's when I noticed) - 1996 Chimaera 500. Any tips on the common causes and how to fix. Please bear in mind that I am not a very able mechanic but don't mind trying...

Thanks,
J.

Does your milometer work? If not then it's more than likely to be the speed sensor on the gearbox or diff (it differs!), as I've had the same on my Chim. May need replacing or just adjusting/cleaning.

Also I think there's a fuse it goes through too.

Nope the milo isn't working either, it needs a service too so I think I'll mention that when I take it in for the service.
Cheers.

it was the speed sensor on the diff that packed up on mine...

Apparently it was the transmitter. A good way to tell if it's likely to be that is when both the speedo and mileometer stop working. If it's the speedo only then it's a dash out jobby. The transmitter's easier to change.

I have to put up with VERY bumpy Belgian roads and the speedo cable (electrical not mechanical) actually came loose. If you can get into your dash, make sure your leads are all securely attached to the back of the speedo. The one loose lead actually stopped both the speedo and the odometer so it wasn't the transmitter in my case.

Mine is going in a week on Saturday for a packed up speedo and Milometer.

About £42+VAT for the sensor and £52+ VAT labour.

Sensor problem. I had the speedo only pack up and it was dash off, speedo out and repair. Luckily under warrenty as its not a cheap repair
