I think Hughsie uses the Ecstas on the back of his Chim and rates them pretty highly.

Myself I use Falken FK451s (now superceded by the 452) and think they are fantastic.

Toyo T1R's are superb, next best thing to the S02's.

For absolute best grip you should try one of the so called “road legal slicks” Yokohama do the A032r in sizes that will fit both the front and the rear. A fair few of the main Tyre names do an equivalent, often sold as a track day tyre but sometimes they are only available from the motor sport outlets. In the motor sport rule book (the blue book) these are in list 1b rather than 1a which are considered as standard road tyres. Often if you are competing in a road going class list 1b tyres are not permitted as they are so grippy they give a considerable advantage. The level of grip is much much more than a standard road tyre, but be warned, you don’t get many miles out of them, they are expensive and they can be a bit hairy scary in the wet.

just got myself a pair of FK452s for the rear and I am well impressed. After a couple of hard runs to get the tyres warm and wear off the coating they have been performing fantastically- especially in serious standing water on the M1 last weekend. total confidence.

I've had FK451's and FK452's on past cars - 452's are a massive improvement over the 451's (which themselves are good for the money) - I had the 452's on my last car, which had roughly 300 lbs/ft of torque and they still managed to get the power down effectively in the wet and grip in the bends - good stuff. Can't fault them for the money. Currently my Chim's on T1-r's on the rear and they're grippy too - pretty sure they cost more than the 452's though. www.falkentyres.co.uk is usually the cheapest place to buy falkens if you go down that route.

I have looked about for a set of the falken 452s but cannot find them in the 245/45`s. they did a 451 in that size but you cant get that tyre now as the 452 replaced it :mad

I'd have to go with the T1-R's then. Not cheap at £88 a corner, but cheaper than S02's at £118!

P.S. going back to the original post, Kumho 712's are good for the money, that being £63 a corner at Camskill in the size you want... don't be fooled into buying the "new and improved" KU31's though, absolute rubbish by comparison. I bought them when I needed to replace the 712's on a previous car and they understeered everywhere.

I've got those on mine, nothing but praise for them. Great grip & seem to last well, though as others have said, they take a bit of bedding in.

Me too. Very progressive tyre, and gives you an excellent feel as to where the grip limit is.

Shame they don't do them for the fronts (at least not in the correct speed rating)...

I have never run 712s but have seem several recommendation saying "the Kumho KU31 is the best and only Kumho to fit" on other forums. confused

I have KU31s on my other two cars and am highly impressed, every bit as good as the top brand tyres. However, I put Toyos (T1/S) on my Chim and am just as impressed. (Note however, I wouldn't say I am any less impressed with the Kumhos!)
