Hi all, just joined the forum and would like to pick your brains on servicing. I have an S reg Chimaera (60k), which is due a minor service (last service was a big one 14 months/5k miles ago). It has full TVR history, but with the quote for a service at over £600 I was wondering whether this represented good value.

The car is running ok, a bit lumpy maybe - but for much much less than £600 I reckonned I could do quite a lot - oil & filter, plugs, set idle and CO, maybe give her a new dizzy cap and a set of magnecor leads.

So question is - will I notice the money spent getting it serviced by TVR (or by a specialist for nearly as much) or should I do it myself? What effect do you think it would have on saleability and resale?

Cheers

Where are you in the UK? There are plenty of reputable specialists that charge nowhere near that amount for a 6k service.

Find a good indie, personally I use the V8 centre in High Wycombe, excellent service IIRC about £300 inc vat and parts for an interim, a bit more for the full monty. That includes a full front to back nut and bolt check and everything lubricated , even including the boot lid hinges ! I have tried a few other places but perry really knows his stuff when it comes to TVR's, he even has a Griff himself .

Make sure you get the chassis waxoiled at the same time.

Oil,filter, cap, roter arm, and Magnecor leads will set you back nearly £200 + vat.

If you happen to be in reach of Crawley/Gatwick, I can't recommend the guys at Austec highly enough. Fair pricing, know their onions, gave me free and unsolicited advice when I first took mine their after purchase for a checkup. Great bunch of guys to boot and lurrrrvve TVRs.

Whereabouts are you to start with?

Personally if ths your first TVR I would go to a good indie for your first service someone like Austec or Andy at APM are ideal.

Have an appraisal of your car by someone who works on them every day, they know what to look for especially things such as tolerances in bushes, condition of suspension components etc and various other things that can wear or age on these cars.

Once you have done this you can then choose to service yourself should you wish as they are really easy to work on once you get used to them but try and build up as much knowledge as poss.
