Hi All
Currently trying to buy a Chimaera and went to see one at a regular car dealer in Basingstoke, appears its been languishing there since May, strange me thinks.
Gave the chassis as much of a good look as possible given the 66k mileage, appears to be no waxoyl in sight.
Could anyone please confirm for me the areas that you find the most prevalent corrosion on the chassis's
I assume rear of the front wheels and along what would be the sill areas of convential cars.
Secondly there is a small round black rubber patch covering a hole in lower rear valance adjacent to r/h exhaust,
immediate thought is damage but hole seems to be uniform - know what I mean?
ps Is there a "sticky" or link for chassis evaluation?
Many thanks in advance for any help

It also had a leaky exhaust manifold when I went to have a look at it.

The main areas to look are the out riggers, ther are flat triangular plates where the body bolts to the frame. off hand without looking they are behind the front arches and in front of the rear ones. also look at the tubes that run down each side and the fron wish bones as these are all prone to rot.
Where is the rubber bit you are on about?

Hello There,

If it's been there since may the car may be a bit out their usual business. I think the general consensus is never buy the first one you see unless you know what it is you're looking for.

The main areas to look out for rust are on the out-riggers expecially where the tubes meet. These can e identified with the triangular plates behind the front wheel and in front of the rears.

If there's been no waxoyl I'd be very cautious as repairs are might prove expensive.

The small round rubber thing could be a drain hole. I think some had them for water drainage to stop water getting into the boot.

Have a look at www.chimaerapages.com/resources_buyers.php and www.thegriffithpages.com/buyers-guide.html Some nice images of what can happen in a nasty way to badly rusted outriggers.

K

Anther big place for rust are the front wishbones, manifold blows are nothing to worry about and commonplace however if it is on the OS manifold get them to sort it for you as the manifold is a bit of a pig to get out unless you take the starter out from underneath.

[smug] A copy of the 2nd edition was included in the purchase of my '93 4.3 (as was an outdoor/indoor car cover)... [/smug] Good thing, too, to make the 3 hrs 40 mins on the return ferry pass a bit quicker than on my way to Harwich...
