I tried one company whose name I cant remember (lost the email) ETB or something like that but they only do speedos up to '95's.

They all do that, sir.
Things that have fixed the problem in the past:
1) Travelling by ferry. (Beats me)
2) Some rapid reversing
3) Having the wife tap repeatedly on the speedo with a pencil whilst driving along. Whilst accelerating hard. Whilst reversing with gusto.
4) Ripping the thing out, stamping on it until it smashed into little pieces and having Racing Green fit a new one.
Mine exhibited the problem at 19,999, 29,999, 39,999 and we got angry at 49,999 which is why our car currently shows 1005 miles despite being "born" in 1998.
It could quite likely happen again at the next 19,999...

www.speedycables.com Around £75 plus vat and postage. 14 day turnaround IIRC.
Thanks for all the advice - I didnt mention, it also stuck at 39,999 but eventually banging the face of the speedo with the butt of a torch while travelling at speed and pressing the reset button fixed it...until 40,500. This time it looks stuck for good. Time to get that dash off and hit it with a hammer I think. If that fails its off to the repairers. Do they also remove dents from the case ;-)
I had this problem, but being a tight fisted git, I held onto my money and fixed it myself. Now done over 2K miles and no problem.
Remove the speedo from the dash and get some soft clothes to rest the face of it on. Get a small very small screw-driver and gently prise the the surround plate lip up and then unscrew the cable on the back. Take a photo of the screws and cable positions before you do this.
Remove with care the glass face and gently allow the speedo to fall into the palm of your hand.
Do not touch the needle.
Look carefully at the number dials and with care and gently press the trip release/reset a couple of times. With the small screw driver gentle move the stuck number dial/dials a faction. Again press the trip button.
Replace the speedo in case and attach the screws and cables refit in dash and drive car round the block to check movement. If not successfull repeat process till it works.
Once working, remove speedo and replace glass face, good time to give a clean and polish to glass and surround.
Replace surround with holds glass by using screw-driver shaft in a gentle rolling movement.
If you are up for it, its easy but you must take care, have clean hands, soft cloths and time to play with speedo.
Its cheaper and works and who knows it may be just the same process as the paid repair guys do it.
Hope it helps,
