Anyone got any ideas .............

I have a 98 4.0 Chimaera & when driving - I get a regular Ticking/clicking behind dash near the speedo.

Are the speedos cable driven ? - if so I thought maybe it could be the cable failing ?

Apart from that I'm pretty lost - as there is not much to get your hands on behind there.

Also have a near side brake light fail that is somewhere in the wiring - is there a vulnerable area I should look for.

Thanks in advance !!

Regards

speedo's not cable driven (in mine at least)

There was a thread a few weeks ago about clicking (it seems pretty common) and it's possibel causes.

my chim is a 94 and does not have the tenth of a mile wheel.
This makes a click every time you do a tenth of a mile.

You can take the speedo apart and stop this but it will still click once every mile.
Not anything to worry about.

Maybe a silly suggestion, but it's not the stepper motor is it?

Not if it making a regular click.
The stepper motor makes a click when you turn the ignition on. Once the engine is running there is no way you could here it driving along.

As for the rear lights....have a look behind the velco carpet panel above the seat belt inertia wheel. There is a connector there for the rear lights...might be worth a look...just pull it apart and reconnect a few times...and check the earth points.

It could be the tenth of a mile click, but I thought the speedos on post 97 cars were electronic?

Mine clicks all the time. Definitely not a mechanical click, sounds more like one of them there clicker frogs you had when you were a sprog.

Is yours the relay clicking for the interior light...?
try opening the dorr with the engine off and press the light switch in and out a few times.

If it is a constant click then there cant be much else as there is nothing under the dash...!!!

Not a ticking/clicking noise that I get and it doesn't happen all the time, but I sometimes get a regular mechanical noise that sounds like it has a plastic source. It definitely increased according to road speed, so one day I put the clutch pedal down whilst driving and switched off the ignition. As the speedo is electronic (and ignition-switched) it stopped and so did the noise. Ignition back on, noise came back. The noise changed with road speeed, not engine speed, so it must be from the speedo, not the rev counter.

yes I think the Right Reverend Heath (font and Oracle of all knowledge) mentions it in Bible II. A TVR redundant (can of worms!) counter on the original unit and, as said, nothing to be concerned about.

There was a post about clicking noises from the dash last week, think about 90% of chims do it, we all pretty much settled on it being the faces of the clocks expanding with heat.
Next time you drive it let it warm up inside a bit then poke the face of the oil or water temp clock and i think you will get the same noise.
