Feck - got in to the garage this morning just unplugging the accumate and I saw a strange shadow on the floor.

At fist I assumed coolant - but know oil and all of it. Not a drop left in the car.

Oil pressure on the way home last night was normal, however when I got it to work I noticed a slight oil mark where I usually park.

So is it safe to assume that the sump plug was working loose and at home (or just before) it fell out?

Or is it likely to be something more serious.

(In any case I have no easy way of looking - so I guess it's an AA job to get the motor to my Indy).

TIA

FG

I've heard of sump plugs being loosened by hitting a speed bump. I hope that's all it is mate! Good luck.

I lost all my engine oil after hitting a speed bump (at 2mph) but it took 15 miles for the oil to abandon ship.

TVR Gatwick (R.I.P) fixed everything for me and said it was a common problem with the Chim.

I hope your problem is only the Sump plug…….

Would AA Home-Start chaps have the kit to jack it up and replace the sump plug (I'll by the shpub magnetic one)?

After all I do pay them a yearly premium - time for them to earn their corn?

You don't need to jack it up to replace / tighten the sump plug

But I bet the AA would replace it with a plain ordinary sump plug (which to be fair is perfectly adequate).

I take it that it is reachable from the side then - or do you need arms like Inspector Gadget?

where could I buy a sump plug from - is it a fairly standard item - so a Land Rover dealer?

Is that what it is then?

dunno yet - just planning for it is. I think I'll need to wait till Saturday and get AA home start out to take a look.

For god sake man - get on the floor and have a look to see if it's missing - unlikely - otherwise you'd have lost the lot on the journey and the light would have come on. So like lots of us it's just gotten loosened by impact and overnight it drained out on your floor. So grab a spanner and tighten it up. Don't call the AA out and lose your no-claim for a loose sump plug!

Figured out a contingency plan for the oil slick on your garage floor (assuming you didn't hang around to sort that out before you hurried off to work?)

another question (you've probably already guessed my competency with things spanner shaped ) -

assuming it is the sump plug that needs replacing/tightening can I just then top up with oil - or do I need to prime the oil pump or anything else I should be aware of?

TIA

You'll be ok just topping up just check the oil pressure gauge kicks in soon after starting...

Remember to put the oil filler cap on after cant think of anything else...

Yes it is a loose sump plug - can see the oil dripping from it - however there is no way I can simply grab a spanner and tighten it up

a) don't have a suitable spanner (what size is it - 28mm?)
b) can't get the jack under (damn lowered suspension) so can't get it on axle stands
c) I don't have 8 foot long arms or a pit in the garage

So sod it, I'm using my yellow get out of jail card.

cheers all.

All sorted.

Sump plug was only on by 2 threads with no apparent sign of damage.

Can these work loose on their own or is it likely not to have been fully tightened at oil change?
