Engine temperatures
Discussion
As I have only owned my chim 4.5 when the air temperature has been cool, and also knowing that they can be prone to overheating, how much does the engine temperature vary in extremes.
Curently mine reads from 70 whilst I'm travelling down a motorway but just shy of 95 if I'm stuck in traffic for a bit. Am I likely to have problems with overheating in traffic come summer?

Looks pretty much the same as mine - been that way for 5 years even out on the hottest days in the center of London traffic - never overheated once. No reason to anticipate trouble ahead. Important things to check are correct thermostat fitted and that the electrics powering the fans are in good condition and switching correctly.
Sounds fine to me, but I don't think any of them like to be stuck in traffic on a summers day.
You could check that both fans are operating when it's left to idle for ten minutes and maybe bleed the system for a bit of reassurance. Some people rate 'Water- Wetter' which is apparantly not derived from snakes...

Mine used to always run in the late 90's when in traffic, that is untill I had the engine rebuilt this year by TVR Power. Now it never goes over 80, I would never have beleived it if I wasn't there myself with my eyes fixed to the gauge in every traffic jam!
Really should stop doing that now and start watching where I'm going

It never goes below 80 now you mention it

sounds the same as my last one but when the fans came in they used to take about 5 mins before they went back off.
Just got a new one and they only run for about 45 sacs max before cutting off again is this right? plus mine runs at about 65 all day long and takes a long time in trafic to heat up, the highest it has ever gone is 85, could this just be a dodgy reading gauge?

Mine is typically around 70-75 on a clear run, rising to 90-95 in stop-start traffic. Stuck in a noise to tail jam coming out of Le MAns a couple of yers ago in 36 degree ambient heat for two hours, and it didn't go above 95 at all with the fans tripping in and out. Went out for a blast on sunday and it struggled to get up to 70 on the run, which meant no spare heat in the cabin for me
, but rose to high 80s low 90s in traffic.
As has been said, all the gauges/senders are slightly different so its a case of getting used to the readings for your car and looking out for anything unusual. Worth checking the fans cut in and out occasionally too. Don't want to discover the fuses have blown when you're stuck in the middle of London Thunder...

Amen to that. Both of mine had wildly different readings which changed again when senders were replaced. You just get used to watching the gauge. As long as the temp stabilises and doesnt continue to increase in traffic you should be OK.
