I have 1996 Chimaera which I use for work ,it has monster milage and probably worth nada. I have been offered a rolled Land Rover Discovery diesel, so I'd like to convert my Chimaera to use the discos engine has anyone ever put one of these engines in a TVR.

I think that if you did do it Peter Wheeler would probably come round personally and give you a talking to (or worse).

I thought I might get some stick over this, it just seemed an good idea. the car has well over 100k on the clock and is a bit tired I do the best part of 20/25k per year and bit more economy would be good. How about a gas conversion?

I do hope this is a troll... if not, then:

Seriously, is the current engine knackered? If so, go to a breakers and get another TVR Power Rover V8. Or sell the car as is and let someone else do it. If you're worried about fuel economy (hence the diesel route) then as has already been said, buy a runabout.

Don't demean the marque by putting anything but a MORE powerful engine in it...

Sorry what have I done, I thought owning a TVR made individuals free thinkers etc etc......I did not expect such a blinkered view. I enjoy driving my car and if this project helps make the car what I need then so be it. Its only a plastic land rover with a few ford and vauxhall bits thrown in, its not a Porsche!

To my mind, a TVR without a TVR engine in it, is not a TVR. Up to you what you do Big Col, not my business, but I can't imagine there's a great resale market for cars of this nature. I just think you're going to devalue what you have and that's why to me it's a bad idea.

Hey, don't quote me as if I suggested it!!

However, I must ask at what point does an engine become a TVR engine? Are you saying that ONLY the Speed 6 and AJP8 engines are TVRs? Or are the Chimaera and Griffith allowed access to this exclusive club because their Rover V8s have been breathed on by TVR Power? And what about the S with its 6 cylinder Ford engine?

To be honest, I don't think a diesel sports car is anathema. Westfield had a 7 with a Sierra Turbo-diesel in it back in the 80's and I recall that it embarrassed many a so-called performance car at the time and turned in 70-odd mpg too.

Oh dear, I seem to be coming around to the idea. BUT I don't think an unmodified Disco diesel has any place in the engine bay of a Chimaera. Now a modified one, done as a performance project rather than an economy project could be an amusing two-fingered salute at the current car-hating establishment. Which would be nice.

Forgetting the insults going - go for an LPG conversion. Not only runs cleaner (though reduced MPG) but damn cheap - effectively half the price for fuel! Nice big tank in the boot and job done - the RV8 is a sinch to convert and there are loads of people that have gone this route. The only thing is that you will need to have the engine checked over - worth making sure that it is in tip top condition first, no other reason that to make sure you have the fewest amount of problems with LPG.

I know of at least one other TVR that has been converted and to be honest, anything that keeps you motoring has got to be a good thing.

Oh, and for gods sake - dont put a Land Rover Diesel in it - its a crap engine with rubbish power. Technically old, though does go on forever. If you are convinced that diesel is the way forward then get a more modern one, but the LR diesel isnt the best place to start..

Cheers,

Paul

Diesel engines are also heavier so would affect the handling. LPG would seem the best option

Not my intention to quote you out of context old chap, sorry about that. Certainly no thoughts of an exclusive club here, I have a Chimaera like yourself. I just think such an extreme modification is not in keeping with the idea of the original design, so you no longer have what you started with or even a derivative of it.

Cheers,
Steve.
