Can someone please tell me what parts I will need to convert a none p/s 4.5 car to one with power steering?
Obviously I'll need a rack, pump and pipes, but is there anything else I’ve overlooked?
Also an approx cost I might need to pay for the full kit?
Fitting I would do myself.
Cheers

The steering rods and ujs are different lengths, so you'll need these too.

Cost for new parts is around £1500-1700 but not sure of availability of racks. Considerably less if you can find a scrapped car. Also need a reservoir.

Drive belt for the pump, depending on what age the car is you'll need a longer serpentine belt, or a longer/additional V drive belt if its an additional belt you may need a different pulley on the crank or waterpump (not sure on the details on the earlier cars)

That's a lot of money to ruin a good car IMO!

Appreciate all the advice!
Any Idea what I might have to pay for a full 2nd hand kit from a scrap car?

Have you considered electric power steering pump ~ its certainly makes the project a little easier (no power drain from engine) but rack is still major expense.

So how do you manange to get this magical free energy to drive the electric pump? Electric pumps get their drive from the alternator/battery instead of a belt, but it isn't free power!

AirCon & power steering will norm take power from the engine, using the alternator to charge will not increase the load on the drive belt. I guess I shoud have used the phrase not so much power loss ~ particularly when you want max power. If your battery is fully charged your engine will appear more powerful - the alternator is harder to spin when it is charging fully (ok not a lot - but every bit helps....:-)

Dave

PS its also a lower weight solution :- power / weight = speed ( I'm in the <weight£ minority before the >power£££££££ majority ) forgive my simplified equation but its keeps my mind focused on the basics.

I sourced a PAS conversion kit from Bell Hill Garage for my father-in-law's pre-serp Chimaera. This was October last year and was about £800 + VAT for a refurb PAS rack, pump, resevoir etc.

Fitting was completed professionally and sounded like a bit of a b*stard. I'll try and get some pics up this weekend of the pump drive.

The reason for the conversion before you ask was to appease my mother-in-law and avoid blowing 30 grand on a Volvo C70 or anything with lighter steering. I'm glad they've kept it because its an awesome car and I've got first dibs on it when she does finally get her way.

Well said that man! Drive one with PAS first, loose feel/feedback and the seat of the pants driving experience.
Only benefits are at very low speed when parking and 3 point turns.
