283mm brake conversion kit - Is this the right bracket?
Discussion
I recently bought a pair of brackets from an Indie that will allow me to put 2wd cosworth discs on and keep the original calipers. This I believe is the same as the Tower View conversion that has been talked about. I have the brackets and now the discs and have spent the morning trying to figure out how it goes together. Can anyone shed any light looking at the pics below? I can see a possible solution with a bit of drilling and tapping, but I was under the impression it just bolts on. Any help most gratefully received.

This is the setup I installed a few years ago, and the same ,no brackets.
The granny uses 278 discs so I think they have a different caliper mount (or slider) ,the 283 is close to the caliper as it spins, but no problems
Just changing my pads now to redstuff.
Bloody hell nano,
I wish I had seen this before today! I've returned it all now, as I am not happy with the fact that the pad does not cover the full area of the disc (as illustrated at the bottom). This will surely result in a ridge forming on the inside part of the disc face. Wasn't happy. Thanks very much for posting it though!

Nick,if its any use if you can get a pair of cossie granada circa 92/94 callipers(i got mine online part finder 2 days after i filled out the form)paid £50 to the door(nice tidy ones)resealed them(cheap also),you have to drill the hub out to 10mm from 8mm easy peasy(cast iron is soft) no tapping(lugs have loads of material so no problems)use 4 2mm spacer washers with original type cossie bolts(i purchased 4 new)keep original hoses, should take no longer than 2 hours, everything lines up,big brakeing improvment i have grooved discs and so far have not faded this set/up on the road.Nick if you can get the callipers your in business, this as to be the easiest big brake upgrade i have ever carried out.
That Daddy,
Thanks for the info you posted, but I fear that as you have a slightly earlier 4.0, I think the set up is different on the later 5.0s. As you say, you drilled yours ou form 8mm, I think mine is already 10. I'm very reluctant to try any more chancing of mismatched parts. I spoke to a chap the other day (a motorsport supplier) and he is of the opinion that cossie 4x4 calipers still need a bracket to allow use of a 283mm disc. As a result, I'm still unsure what will fit and what won't.

Oh of course Nick,i cant say for sure that your hub lugs are longer to mount the carrier due to your car having the bigger disc than the 240mm(possibly they are longer methinks),maybe someone can come forward with that info, there different for sure if you have the 10mm holes already, mmm i can see your dilema.

I fitted the Tower View set up with 283mm discs and the alloy caliper brackets a few years ago to my '99 450. The lower hub drilling needs to be tapped but is already the correct diameter (10mm i think). You also have to fettle the bracket a bit to ensure that it sits evenly on the lugs and I had to relieve it a bit to allow the caliper piston seal enough clearance, easy enough if you are handy with an angle grinder and a file. The caliper position is perfect and certainly no overhang of the pads off the disc
. The Tower View set comes with good instructions and my set up has worked perfectly. PS: let me know if you want photos or more details.

Thanks Tahiti450,
I've just about given up on this idea. If someone can categorically say if a 4x4 cossie caliper bolts straight on and if it uses 2wd or 4wd discs (283 or 278mm) I'll be a happy bunny. Until then, I'm sticking with the std 260mm discs. Thanks for your reply!

Right you want Escort or granada cosworth calipers. Brake engineering number Ca1396 and ca1396r calipers.
These are from a Two wheel drive granada cosworth.
I run these (with the hub holes drilled out to 12mm) along with 283mm 2wd cosworth discs.
The only thing I would say is get the slider brackets from the same car.
If it helps, the calipers should have 887 and 888 on them (casting numbers)
I checked today at my local factor and those CA numbers showed up as this car, he wanted £70 each exchange, not sure if they check what you give them.

Oh yeh , and I have just fitted EBC red stuff 3956C pads and they go right to both the inside and outside edges of the disc.....

Antonyj,
Those pad part numbers are the same for Sierra/Escort 4x4 I believe. It may be easier to source calipers through the various cossie suppliers. There's a breaker in Portsmouth who deals specifically with cossies. Thanks ever so four your help. The big fact is that the whole disc is being covered.
many thanks,
Nick

This guy wants £15 for a caliper.
See how much he wants for both......
