Guys,
Does anyone know where I can get hold of a high-level brake light suitable for the Chimaera? I am taking the car with me to Australia next month when we emigrate and they require one to be fitted to obtain compliance.

I'm hoping to get something that looks not too tacked on & thinking I might have a better chance of finding a cosmetically attractive solution before we leave the UK. Some of the ones I have seen are bolted onto the top of the boot lid and screwed down which I think may spoil the lines slightly, so if anyone knows a slicker solution it would be appreciated..

Cheers

Funny you should come up with this.
I bought one yesterday!
I had the idea of fitting it inside the top of the window using the self adhesive pads.
I had great difficulty in finding anywhere that stocked them, eventually I got a Ring Automotive RL197 for £15.
The guy in the shop did say that generally there is a problem with these things because the light shines inside the car but some had sorted it by using black draught excluder to seal it to the glass.
Trying it in the car it was obvious that it would not work in the Chim, could not get it close enough to the window & light would have gone everywhere. Also the lamp was a bit obstructive when using the mirror. This solution would not work anyway if its a legal requirement as it would disappear with the back of the roof down. I was going to fit a switch in the boot to isolate it when the roof was down.
Hey hum, I've given up. Going to give my lad the lamp for his old Fiesta, maybe he'll buy me a beer.beer
Anyway,I'm sorry that all of the foregoing in no way solves your problem, but maybe it might save others wasting money or wondering if its possible.
There are a few Tivers down in OZ, maybe see what they do?

Not sure about this but rather than putting one on the boot lid, could you not find one that could sit in the rear of the roof plastic window, or does it have to sit on the back of the car.

Just a thought!!!!!!!!!!!

Are........ TVR Keith beat me to it and it does not work apparently so how about (although would be more costly) but having the edge of the boot lid cut out and a brake light mounted in there.
This would solve the once roof off and down the light not showing.

This would be expensive but worth it it you have to have one and you want to drive it in Australia.

Just a second thought!!!!!!!

Hi
All the new TVR's that came in NZ had to have hi stop's,we fitted the Audi 90 convertible ones that are very sleek and look like they were made for the car,I'll try and post a pic later.

edited to add it appears they are not Audi but made here by Hella, model number 5242.
Best pic I could find, but it gives you an idea.

The MX5 has a neat light that any GRP bodyshop ought to be able to integrate into the boot lid. Or Demon Tweeks do something a bit larger.

Thanks for the info. I don't think mounting one inside the targa bar behind the rear screen will be allowed as it will need to be visible with the roof down to get through compliance.

That Hella model looks like a very good option though, nice and slimline.

Ideal solution would be to have something like the MX5 style light mounted into the bootlid but I don't think timescales will allow that with only a couple of weeks left before the car goes into the container.

Cheers

Do the Chim and the Griff share the same rollbar and rear screen setup? I.E. will a brake light mounted there be visible on a Chim? (with the roof up, naturally)

I have one in the gap between the boot lid and body, you can not see it until it is on.

I'd been thinking of putting one there too but didn't know where you might be able to buy one that thin.... Do you have any pics so we can see what it looks like?

I will dig a couple out. I made mine, LEDs soldered to "veroboard" then sprayed with posh clear sealant. A strip of foil top and bottom to reflect so you can see them from all angles.

Coolio. I'm only down the road in Chipping Sodbury, let me know when you've 'dug them out'. BTW, how does posh clear sealant differ from working class clear sealant? hehe

I'll get me hat 'n' coat...
