Has any one looked into the Norwich Union "Pay As You Drive"™ insuranceread. It sounds like a good idea for those of us who drive weekends and very little during the winter months. i just wonderd if any one had been a quoted for it or had any experiance with it being installed.

I'd reccomend Hagerty's ( www.hagertyinsurance.co.uk )- £200 for my '98 450, classic policy with 3k miles per year. Very friendly service from the guys there, one of them is a chim owner I think.

i've not had it installed but I went to their website to get a quote, it asks you a lot of your journey times, where to, times of days etc.

I put in limited mileage and for a TVR Chim it still came out at over £1000!!! I did say i was using for long hauls to thw estcountry in the summer but only 3 or 4 times a year and afterall that is the point of a car like this.

As I am nearing buying a Chimera I still have had the best quotes best on a limited mileage, garaged policy. This would be my 2nd car so may be different if your using everyday.

I wouldn't touch that with a barge-pole !

Far too close to the governments hopes for the future; almost seems they are dipping a foot in the water by the side door. Shop around.

Thanks guys i think i will steer clear of the “Black BOX” when my renewal comes round.

I’m paying quite a high insurance at the moment about £1200 for street parkingvomit
It’s my first year so I expect a few specialist insurers to be interested this year in a more competitive quote.
Thing is my baby spends most of its time( winter and bad weather) in my parents garageboxedin under a cover and when its at my place even on the street it still lives under a good quality all weather cover.
When I next insure should I say garaged? Its no lie, just the garage isn’t at my address. What do any of you people think of this scratchchin, after all most people say garaged when there ant a hope in hell of the car ever getting in there!.smash

Exactly, once a few have signed up to that it'll be used as a way for rolling out all the other things we don't want. Don't forget this is an insurance company looking to protect it's profits. They don't care about us. So, the more control they have over our driving the better it is for them.

I would be very careful about "garaging" statements as they are very easy to check. Normally if you say it is garaged every night then it should be unless you have gone away in it. If you are at your place of residence, and you say it is garaged every night then if it stolen from the street of driveway you chance of payout is slim. You will need a police ref for the theft, and lying to them is infinitely more risky.

I don't see that a cover makes any difference as this is about security.

From my recent discussion with some of the specilaist insurers, they seem to have more flexibility (I went with Hagerty who offered a really sharp quote with lots of extra features).

It's really aimed at new drivers who have a very high accident record when they drive when the pub shuts.

Hmmmm scratchchin when I approached them for a quote recently, they quoted a tad under £300 for mine (a '96 4 litre) with very similar terms to you.

Less than slim, given that the policy normally states something along the lines that if it's parked at your normal place of residence and not garaged after 10pm, it's not insured.

Not sure what they'd make of it were it stolen while you popped in to open the garage doors...

This is slightty worrying. Mine is insured for being parked on the drive. I have a shared driveway, and there is usually plenty of room for me to park several cars if I want to, but sometimes due to where other people have parked (including my own visitors) I decide that leaving it on the street is easier. It's a quiet cul de sac so pretty safe. Does this mean that if I'm at home I should never leave it parked on the street overnight? Or should I find out what Direct Line's attitude is?

Would they be able to tell how fast you had driven the car? If they can then its probably best for owners of every day cars not performance cars. If the underwriter sees that you've gone over 70mph, I reckon the premium will go up.

good points all round. thanks for the help guys.i guess i'll have to insure it for street parking only dispite being garaged usualy. Its interesting to see that there is some talk about having it wrapped up for the night at 10 pm , home address on some policies . What if you are staying round freinds or passing by a hotel and just decide to stay the night? .yikes

That's fine, 'cos you're not at home! All the insurers are trying to do is make sure that people who say their car is garaged are actually garaging it and not just lying to reduce the premium.

Speak to Direct Line! All that matters is what's in writing from the insurers!
