I'm kinda wondering whether it is normal to freeze to death at the wheel of a chim in the winter ? .....I just drove 60 miles at maybe up to ....errr 90 mph (oh noooo officer not me ! ) anything over 60 and my temp gauge was not even registering and the heater did not work at all.I got out of the car shivering ! ....1st pint of hurliman warmed me nup though .....any thoughts ?

Sounds a little odd to me although I don't own one (YET!). Even my Land Rover which has the most ancient and agricultural heating system in the world kicks out a decent amount of heat and I was coming back as similar speeds down the motorway today and it was fine.

Don't know were the problem may be but check your cooling system, coolant level etc.

sodall2doo. Sounds like it could be a sticking thermostat(or removed), is it taking a long time to warm up on the drive ?. I see your a boat builder , what do you build and where?.

I had exactly the opposite experience ( see thread lower down ).

I would rather have had a lower coolant temperature and been able to keep going.

You could try your local ski wear shop for suitable clothing !

Check the footwell vents. My temp gauge always reads low and the heat output on the drivers side is feeble, however, my OH reports that the drivers side is warm as toast IF the vent is open.

In the olden days people used to blank off part of the radiator with baco foil. Might be worth a try to see if you engine is being over cooled. That would implicate the thermostat (if you have one).

The 82°C stat sounds right for your car, but be sure it's a TVR part that's being fitted, not a standard Land Rover part. The TVR stat has a much wider opening.

If the stat has failed and is stuck open, this should be an effective fix. But if it's been removed there may be an underlying reason why, so keep an eye on the temperature gauge.

It could be that the stat is missing or faulty. But it's also common to drill a small hole through the stat to improve bleeding, and this time of year it only takes a tiny trickle of water through the rad to overcool the engine if you're driving gently.

I dont get anything over 60 when i am driving along in the winter months, no matter how far i travel. If i get stuck in traffic it will still get up to temp quite quickly but not go over 90deg.

It has got an 82 deg thermostat in for winter and i change theat for a 76ish one in summer.

Mine has the same problem , in traffic up to 90 degrees lovely and warm heater but on a run the guage drops to just below 70 and heater is cold. ive replaced a thermostat with an 82 degrees one . and still the same problem, so it wasnt that , i have noticed that when starting from cold the radiator starts getting warm quite quickly , even before the engine gets anywhere near hot.

this problem sounds very similar to yours and it has me baffled as well. if u find out i would love to know what it is??

Does the heater work at all?
If you get no heat at all you might have a heater matrix full of air.
Might be worth bleading the cooling system with the heater turned fully on.
Might also be worth getting in the passenger foot well and getting your other half to move the heater hot/cold wheel on the dash and make sure it does actually open and close the heater valve, which if you look up under the dash in the passenger foot well you should be able to see the valve with the water pipes going to it.
Cheers.
Paul.

mine runs at 60 in this weather and gets to 80 in traffic. Whatever the gauge is saying the heater still cooks you.

Guys
Had the same problem in Dec on the last N. Ireland run up the north coast. Great day but bloody cold outside.

Chimaera was all warmed up and nice and warm, but as we got higher up and got clear roads the temp dropped and kept on going.

This was not due to the anything other than the cold weather we were driving in. This is not a fault with the car but just the weather.

It also proves your rad is working just fine, may be even better than it should. Cold air will cool hot air every time.

Its now the time for a beer and keeping the car of the road for a few days till it warms up abit.

Hope it helps
