idea Been thinking of making up a carbon fibre bonnet for the chim. Anyone seen one on a chim? Opinions on whether it would look 'the bollox' or just 'bollox'!!

Think I recall seeing one on a griff too... ACT (?) were working on such a thing. Think that was a griff/chim hybrid bonnet. The carbon bonnet would be much much lighter. Think the idea would really be to show the weave, rather than paint and just benefit from weight saving.. Point taken about looking a bit 'max power'!

The Bonnet and boot lid seem to weigh an ton, was thinking of weight saving properties plus a bit more stiff too

Yeah, took my bonnet off to change engine. Was shocked at how much it weighed confused Not easy putting back on single handedly ;-)

Was thinking of doing boot too as a matching pair. Is the boot heavy too?

Ten times the cost to save maybe five kilos in weight? As a performance mod I don't think the numbers stack up. As a fashion mod, it would probably be cheaper to use that iron-on mock CF veneer!

Not so sure Pete, was qoutes £650 for a bonnet and £450/£500 for the boot lid, I had a new boot lid for my old Chimaera 3 years ago and was over £500 from TVR

Never tried that iron on stuff. Seen it at shows, but dont really go in for mock effects. Weight saving was not really on my mind, but bonnet would weigh in at around 4-5 kg. Fibre glass unit around 30kg? You're right, pound for pound not a good investment! Just thinking aloud and after opinions...

Cheers. Jon

From memory I think Tim from ACT said they are producing one. Aimed more for the track day enthusiast.
I would think they would be quite expensive aswell.

Me lucky, Dad's in the Fibreglass/Carbon fibre business!!! Would only cost materials..
Just knocked up a cf bonnet and boot for girlfriends Ford Ka rally car. Looks the nuts! Co-driver could do with losing many pounds though!!!

If you are looking for customers I'd sign up for a bonnet and a boot lid

Not my motivation! Dont think would be cost effective with the quality of finish required... But before I make one for my car I'd like to know how it would be recieved! Too much work for negative remarks..

Really difficult to get good weave pattern around the chim vents!! If being sprayed not an issue.

I understand the problem, but I want a paint finish

Chimjunkie....... Dont do it.!!!!! I dont want to be a thief and if you parked near me with the bonnet and boot I`d have to steal them. Head light conversion and carbon bonnet would just press the right buttons for me, Max Power or not !! Its good to be different so dont worry about the collective opinions. If YOU like it do it. It can always be reversed if you come to sell.

Steve.

The Chim is an old fashioned British sportscar, not a modern rally/racing car. It has a wood(originally) and hand crafted leather interior with ally detailing, not so sure the Evo13 carbon fibre look is in keeping with what it is?

I also think the ally dash looks wrong and yet most on here seem to think they look great so I may well be out of step with the majority and before someone asks, no, I wouldn't put a 6" diameter exhaust pipe on a Saxo either so I guess that must prove it hehe

IIRC ACT has made a CF griff bonnet with Chim vents. It is raised slightly to accomodateengine mods and is ridiculously light. I'm sure ACT will be along to correct me in bit.

Just a thought - I'm no aerodynamic expert so I might just be talking through my proverbial here but isn't there a problem with bonnets lifting at high speeds so wouldn't a lighter bonnet worsen this issue?

It is only held down on one side, that is the real problem.

You could argue if it flexes less this will improve though?

The other alternative is to stay under 120 hehe

Often wondered if a cerbera type latch would work better?
