Removing Pre Cats Without Removing Manifolds??
Discussion
Hi all, i'm fitting an ACT cherry bomb system next week and thought I might as well take out the pre cats while i'm at it! I remember reading on here somewhere that someone managed to do this without taking the manifolds off - is this possible? I ask this really because taking the manifolds off is going to add hours to the work time so I would much prefer to do it the quicker way! Vague instructions would be much appreciated!

i took mine out with out removing the manifolds did however undo all the bolts on them which gives them a bit of movement so you can get the clips off and at cats ,keep the manifolds away from the blocks will stop anything going down engine.
1.large screw in cat.to hold the bugger still
2.hover in hand(no not that one the electric one)
3.several tins of fosters.
4.chisel in other hand.
5.chip away at cat.
6.suck the droppings up with the hover ,drink some beer, cats out, more beer, look impressed with your self, more beer, job done .
next week we will be doing ECU remapping for beginers, dont forget the beer.

Surely undoing the manifold bolts is the hard part, if you've gone to that length you might as well spend an extra five seconds and take them right off - this will also let you replace the gaskets, which you'll probably need since you've broken the seal on the old ones. I don't see why you couldn't take the precats out with the manifolds fitted, it's going to make access more awkward but still possible I should think. The worry is what happens to the debris left in the manifold afterwards. I don't see it getting into the engine, but it'll probably be blown out the front when you start up and could end up getting dumped on top of the main cat, potentially blocking it.

I have removed the pre-cats with the manifolds in situ, still a nasty job, but saves 2 hours or so. When you have removed the pre-cats, do not put the Y-piece back on, get some dust sheets to cover the magority of the engine bay, wings ect, leaving the manifolds clear. Stand back and start her up, this clears all the debris and prevents blocking the main cat. Short cut tothread discussing above. www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=8&t=347628
