Real world range
Discussion
I'd say the range is between 180 and 230. Longer runs help as does driving in warm weather. The one easy thing you can do to help is use V Power or other higher octane fuels. These don't improve energy output; they simply use less fuel for the same output so you'll get more miles out of a tank.

Agreed. I get 170-230 from my 500 (except for one freak tank of Total Excellium that once did 290 for reasons I cant explain....)

Blimey did'nt that give you the incentive to try Excellium again Phil?, I've only used V Power to date, another newbie getting used to "things", so I will get around to each Purveyor of Motor Spirit in good time. Nice looking 5 mate.
Who cares!!
Just put your foot down! When the gauge gets near the last quarter mark pull in to the place that sells the best jank!
It really does depend on how you drive the car.
Fuel econemy rates bottom whenever I look at buying a car that detracts from the general hum-drum of my working life.
This is why TVR has such appeal - as I can't use mine everyday for work - when you own one and you can have that smug (inward) smile on your face when you look at all the other commuters and know that they probably own one of the many euro-boxes that have made this land so bland - to own a TVR is a fu**ing good feeling!
While you still can - just floor it!

Thanks guys, sounds about what I was expecting. I think my gauge must be a bit iffy as I put in £20 yesterday which took it from 1/4 to full, then dropped faster than I expected down to 1/2 - 3/4 depending on whether I was turning left or right
Although...

PJC, You took the words outta my mouth!
This is what I do:-
Fill her up, drive with a irremovable grin for 200 miles! stop, fill her up again! and so on, and on......
as I use my 500 for a daily drive and business use (aprrox 300 miles a week) I'm on first name terms with most of my local petrol station cashiers!

On a mixed route of motorways, some single carriageway A-roads and some dual A-roads - what sort of range might I expect to get in the Chim? Journey I've got to do is approx 100 miles each way - is it optimistic to think I might get that on a single tank?
You should do it on a single tank. Similar drive for me, tho only 55 miles each way but using M27, M3, A34 then town roads. I refill every two days at a big Tescos for their 99 octane. Guage is showing just over a quarter left by then.
I don't risk going over 240 miles to a tankful. Took it down to 2 litres of go-juice left once, a bit too low for my peace of mind!
Due to the lack of fuel warning light, plus no reserve at Empty ( so I've heard?!?!? )I've always filled up at around the 1/4 tank mark. At that point I used to get about 150 with town/city driving and about 270 on (mostly) motorway journeys....
Does anyone know, can they confirm this 'no reserve' thing with the fuel tanks?? When I bought my Griff it was beyond empty at the showroom, but still managed a good 5 miles or so before the nearest petrol station...

I think the difficulty is literally that YMMV! My Chim seems to have a reasonably accurate fuel gauge and I've squeezed in 55 litres when it was practically indicating empty. My mate actually ran out of fuel in his Griff whilst the gauge was indicating somewhere between 1/8 and 1/4.....
I guess you just need to learn what your gauge actually means....
Just after I bought mine I was pleased as I seemed to be getting quite a lot out of my tank - 240 miles and still going. Unfortunately the gauge had got stuck at 1/4 - I noticed a misfire so pulled over just before the last fumes were finished, and ended up walking to a gas station which was luckily only a mile away. The gauge has been fine since but lesson learnt; since then I fuel up every 200 miles (fine, so long as the odometer isn't stuck!) and always carry an empty fuel can, just in case.

I did the same thing... luckily the AA arrived within five minutes.
I was just remarking on the incredible fuel efficiency when it misfired!

I once got up to Middlewich and back from Welwyn, that's 310 miles crusing at 80mph.
I wouldn't chance it again, I was running on fumes
I once got 280 on a long jouney. I guess steady motorway speeds for hour after hour makes the difference. I'm normally unable to get passed 200. I wouldn't chance it again, I was running on fumes
Been Commuting in mine for nearly 6 years gauge has now got a mind of its own but manage on average to get 250 miles out of a tank 50 Litres reckon 5 miles per Litre on average. Even since the engine up grade crusing is much the same but 200 miles at Zolder last year did see off 100 Litres of Fuel. Also have run out several times and can get 57 Litres in a dry tank.

Cheers Ian. I rate Shell V Power for pops and bangs
, BP Ultimate seems a big flat and the Total Excellium thing was a bit of a one off. It worked out at 26mpg
which just doesnt seem right but I drove from Manchester to Cumbria and back on the tank. Weird. The next tank did 220 so no idea
