Jumped in the car yesterday got to Tesco filled up and guess what - car wouldn't start!! fuel pump priming etc but not noise from starter at all! This is the fouth time in 18 months it's happened to me and on each occasion I've been on a Tesco forecourt (different stations I should add) - never happened anywhere else.
Anyways I've been reading some threads here about the hot start problem and noticed that a lot of people have suffered this problem whilst at a petrol station - coincidence or could there be something in it? - I'd be interested to see how common this is.

Just because you're paranoid it doesn't mean they're not out to get you!!

Yes thanks and I've ordered the Mod wise kit for safe measure so hopefully there won't be any further problems.

You're probably right - or is the car objecting to supermarket petrol?

I had a hot start problem turned out to be the immobiliser, found that out after fitting a new starter and the mod-wise hot start kit (1998 chim 500) investigate further before wasting too much money.
Its a very cheap fix if it is the immob

Fix? Or work-round?

If a fix, I'd be interested to know the details (I've done a work-round)

I don't know anything about the immobliser circuits - the car bump started fine so ignition and fuel were obviously working - is there a separate circuit in there somewhere just for the starter? I've read the bible and can't figure out exactly which relays are involved - if anyone can help with this I'd appreciate it and I'll change them as well.

Thanks to one and all for your good advice - have now fitted modwise kit and, fingers crossed, everything seems to be working as it should. Haven't summoned up the courage to return to Tesco yet - time will tell.

I seem to remember there being an even cheaper solution than the mod-wise kit - something along the lines of shrouding the cables to prevent them getting hot. Does this ring any bells for anyone?

I wouldnt buy petrol from them, just yet ! As to wrapping the cable, do not see how this could provide more voltage to the solenoid which is what is needed ! You could DIY a relay, details are available if you want.

You may be right - Tesco's must have it in for motorists everywhere!

Taking up nig-gtv's comment - presumably it would be fairly simple to wire a back up relay/switch arrangement to run in parralel with the main solenoid wire and fed direct from the 100a starter supply - ie push button start/ hidden override that would bypass any immobilisation of the starter motor circuit? That should at least confirm if the starter's at fault. Anyone see any problems?
