...from a not very technical person.

I spoke to a chap recently who is selling his 4L Chimaera and he mentioned that the rear differential braket (is that the correct term?) had broken and he had it repaired. Is this a common problem?, does it come about from abuse of the car? I would like to know basically because the price seems good, but I'm scared of buying a car that is going to have obvious faults.

It also had a gap in the service history about 2 years ago, but has since been looked after by the present owner who has recently given it a full service. Is that likely to cause problems in the future?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Suggest you find a specialist to do the inspection for you, if you really like the car. That's what I'd do. Not sure how complex a bit of construction a diff bracket is but if the repair is sound, I wouldn't expect it to cause problems. Knowing TVR it's not going to be complicated part, hence easy to replace Please note that like you, I'm no expert either.

I've not seen this as a common issue - never seen it in my time on PH. I'd certainly want to know about the gap in service history, a gap like that could cause a few major issues for you in a little while.

Steve.

Banjolucknicker,

I suspect the part in question is more commonly referred to as Diff mounts. You could try a search on this for more info. Diff mount bushes appear to be fairly common but Ive not heard of a mount itself going pear shaped. If the diff bushes are gone you may notice a pronounced clonk when coming on and off the gas especially in 5th at low speed.

The main thing with this car is the history gap. It may well be fine but I suspect it could be a pig to sell when the time comes.Any gap in the service indicates that someone didnt take proper care of this car for a while and this can be bad news with a TVR.

For your money, I think you could find one without the niggles so it may be good to continue your search for a while.

There was an incredible cooper green chim for sale in the classifieds last week for not too much more cash. I think you may know the car!!!!!!!!!!

Cheers,

Matt.
