My apologies for bringing this topic up again, I've searched through the various articles on this subject but I'm still unsure of a good solution.

I would like to clean up and preserve the chassis on my 98 Chim. I took the front wheel off at the weekend and noticed some of the powder coating flaking off the various chassis rails and wishbones to reveal rusty bits. What is the best way to remedy this? I was going to scrape off all the loose stuff - wire brush it - then paint it with smooth Hamerite White - then paint some wax oil over it.

Would this be the best way or is there a better proceedure to protect and preserve things down under?

Thanks in advance

Hi John,
Thats what I did with mine.
Worth buying some of those brushes that go in the electric drill including the very small ones. Webbs of Tenterden go some at a good price, I think you are in my area!.
Pressure wash the chassis first if possible, makes the job a bit less messy, also gets a lot of the muck out trapped between the outriggers and the sills.
A paint scraper is usefull for removing loose powder coating bits.
Don't forget your eye protection!
I put two coats of white Hammerite on before the Waxoyl. A waxoyl sprayer (Halfords do them) is better than brushing it on.
10,000 miles later all the Waxoyl is filthy but its easily wiped off if needs be.
And you need good light, I use a 1m striplight on a lead with the cover taped on, much better than a lead light.
And hurry up and do it and get back out there driving it, seen you a few times around Tenterden/Ashford area

Thanks Keith

That sounds good advice to me- I'll nip down to see those nice men in brown coats at 'Webbs of Tenterden' for some wire brushes then. It'll be good to tidy things up on the chassis before it gets out of hand. Good idea with the light as well.

I'm sure I've seen your car about in Tenterden too - I seem to remember it parked in the high street last summer, I'll keep an eye and an ear out for you rummbling around.

I have not seen Poorpeet about though!

Pete - Don't know if you remember or not but you gave me some advice on a topic I started some months ago about my 'Tappet Racket' Thankfully it's now been sorted by Chris at James Motor Sports in Molash - near Canterbury 01233 740407. He went straight to it and diagnosed it as a rocker arm problem. He quickley replaced it and now it sounds great! He's a smashing bloke who loves TVRs I would recommend him highly if you needed any problems sorting out if you don't already use him that is

I can take the lid off now and listen to the V8 music, rather than that horrible tapping noise which really pee'd me off.

I'll keep'em peeled for you Pete

Cheers
John

Ditto just about everything TVR Keith said.
Couple of extra points: Use surgical spirit to clean off the oily bits before Hammeriting. Use a rust cure on obvious rusty bits before Hammeriting. Use a disposable sheet for the garage floor/drive/kitchen or wherever before Hammerite and definitely before Waxoyl.
Do use eye protection all the time.
Good luck; it's a tedious, messy but hugely satisfying job.

Yes I'll second that, Chris is a top bloke, knows his stuff and charges about half the rate of a dealer. Had mine up there in January for a service, had a nice T350 there at the time

I'll second what people have said here and add that I thinned the Waxoyle 50/50 with white spirit and sprayed it on with one of those hqand-sprayers you get in garden centres, although I also used a empty sprayer that used to contain wheel cleaner - either should do. Rich...

Thanks for the info John , always good to know a decent garage. What was wrong then? Had the pad dropped out of the tip of the rocker?

Thanks Guys

Really appreciate the replies, cant wait to get started, don't know if I'm gonna get out of decorating our dining room before I get started though, better do that first to earn a few browny points before I shut myself away in the garage!

V8 Animal - that finished shot looks superb - hope mine turns out half as good, thanks for the inspiration

Poorpeet - Regarding the rocker it was the other end to the steel pad that was at fault, there's a small insert which is pressed in , this had come loose, when it got warm it moved up and down and made a hell of a noise - amazing for such a tiny part, really glad it's sorted though

Hello V8Animal

How much of the chassis did you actually mananeg to do? It looks like you did a good job. Was it a body off? Did you manage to do the central tunnel as well?

Body not off!!
4 axle stands as high as you dare.Tricky with 1 trolley jack.
Painted up to the diff do the rest when i do the rear.
I did take the wishbones off which helped alot it enabled me to get to the chassis better.
Painted uprights, chassis, disks, calipers,ARB,wishbones, put new powerflex bushes in and steave heath drop links.
The rear will be the same.
I have more pictures if youre interested.
Cheers
