Have just taken a friend at work for a quick spin at lunchtime around Birmingham City Centre (so if you saw/heard a red Chim earlier it may have been me). Of course he loved it. Finished off with the obligatory look under the bonnet. Anyway mine is only a bog-standard lump with no frills. I have seen a few posts with pictures of engine bays that are very clean, have chrome fittings and nice shiny hoses etc.
Could someone post a few so I can show him how much can be done and how good they can look. Even so he thought the engine/bay was still very clean. Well I supose its all relative.

Here's one I took a copy of for inspiration - Balmoral Greens I think?

and one copied off James Agger's site of a very clean standard engine bay

I haven't managed a decent pic of mine yet, it spends too much time ain a dark garage!

That looks suspiciously like Sean Breary's old one from W.Yorks ... one a few local concourse awards did that car yes

Damn, I'm leaving for Oslo in 3 hours, I wish I had a photo of my engine, Have you seen the article in Feb Sprint, "Mission Improbable"? That's awesome. Standard engine bay cleaned, renewed, and polished, looks awesome, but not boy racer "blinged"

I have a group of friends with Chims, they just drive em, wash the outside occationally, they all look at mine and think I'm sad, "Is that all you do all weekend"

Mines no where near as good as Andy Hill's, but better than any Chim I've seen that's still "standard"

Still, even the "bling" pics here, I LURVE a tidy engine.

Great thread

Thanks

So what's the best approach to getting them nice clean? Any specific cleaning products?

The best one I've found is a bit old fashioned, it's called Elbow Grease.

Start with Gunk if it's filthy, and possibly a steam clean - just be careful. Get intimate with Solvol, and possibly emery paper, if there is alloy corrosion. Painted surface treat just as you would the bodywork, including wax. Hoses and the like clean with a good detergent and if you want them shiny use a silcone product like Armor All. Be prepared once the surfaces are clean to start having urges to replace all the fasteners as they will be corroded and grubby and start to let the rest down.

From there its a downhill slide leading to silicon hose upgrades, stainless fastener kits, chrome, polishing kits ... just keep the bonnet closed, have a life instead!

Anyone know what the finish is on these manifolds please?

They look coated but not ceramic ... more importantly they look like they wouldn't discolour.

Thanks for that DavidH. The exhausts are actually ceramic coated with pre-cats removed.

Where did you get it done please Mac and how much did it cost? (did they remove the cats for you or did you simply hand them the manifold sans cats?)

It looks a superb finish, far better than some of the duller finishes I've seen.

Had them done through 'ACT'. They removed the cats, can't quite remember exactly how much, 'bout £400 mark springs to mind.
