Transmission problem
Discussion
I'm looking for a bit of help with a transmission problem on my 4.0L Chimaera. When accelerating / decelerating I get a "clunk" noise which seems more prevalent at low revs / higher gears (4th/5th). I've read previous posts suggesting diff mount problems but these seem OK.
I lifted the back end and turned the back wheels and there is some definite play which seems to be coming from the gear box. Any suggestions?

It could be that the bolts are loose on the propshaft, they need to be torqued and threadlocked as they have a tendancy to come loose.

I've checked them and they are rock solid. Are there any servicable parts in the gearbox or is it a specialist job? Anyone know where I can get my gearbox rebuilt/recoditioned?
Some play is normal. Could be suspension bushes, propshaft UJs, loose bolts in suspension/transmission, diff mounts/bushes and of course a cracked/damaged chassis but very very rare.
Gearboxes don't tend to clunk. They tend to be noisy and fail to go into gear. If you have doubts take it to a specilaist.
