If you want to get ahead, get a hat
Discussion
I only ever take the Chim out with the roof down. With warm, sunny days might be on their way (or maybe not this week)the dilemma of how to keep the head warm ain't so horny. But, when it's cold and the nose and ears are feeling a bit numb it's a problem.
Now, as the recent sunny spell has thawed the brian out a bit, I've been wondering: what dictates what is and isn't acceptable headware in a soft top:
- if you've got an Atom: full face helmet is de-rigure
- AC Cobra: flying helment seems to work ok
- Old MG: probably has to be a flat cap for him, headscarf for her
- Merc SL; if you have to wear headgear and male then anything other than a baseball cap is v. questionnable. And even then, bball cap only if your hairstyle requires it (!!!)
- Big old Bentley: please, wear whatever take one's fancy, Sir
But, with a Chimaera it's more difficult: the styling and the image suggest that a variety of head wear could be acceptable. But when it's cold you need something that covers the ears (and nose!)
Where I'm really going with this ramble is: when it's cold, can I wear a fullface helmet or will I look a complete and utter arse. Bizzarely, considering that I'm not normally particularly introvert, I haven't yet summonsed up the courage to try it out and see what the response on the road is.

You will look an absolute plank in a full face driving a chim. TBH your nose doesn't get that cold, only the ears really. I've driven mine in snowstorms and minus temps sans roof and never suffered a cold hooter.
I wear either a baseball cap or if really cold a wool beenie style hat that I can pull down over the ears.

Without a doubt it will be...
... It has to be a beanie hat - keeps true to the aerodynamics of the car and its the only one that will stay on!
During the colder months i usually wear a hoody with a wooly hat over the top. This is because i find the back of my neck gets the coldest. The hoody stops that, but then the hood tends to fill up with wind, leading to a rather bizare look. The wooly hat stops this.
I do look like i have just stolen the car though ...

As I'm not yet a Chim owner I'm not sure why I'm rising to the bait... but during an enjoyable morning's run out with cs174 and BoyzToyz yesterday, I'm pleased to say we had the roofs down at all times. Although I forgot my hat. BoyzToyz also gave me a stiff talking to about being sensible, not rushing into things, looking at and/or driving a number of cars before buying, and preferably waiting until the summer's out to take advantages of favourable marketing conditions. All of which of course I know, but it doesn't stop me wanting one NOW!

If you really feel it is absolutely neccessary to drive with the roof off in cold weather, just buy a Griff. You can then have lots of chest wigs & medallions so that the self doubt over your manlihood is confirmed....

Yeah, Chimaeras are for girls!
I have many different styles of hats but mainly hide under a baseball cap!
When I posted last year ref the same dilemma I received loads of abuse from certain folk who seemed to think the innocent question revealed latent homosexuality. Why that should be so I have no idea, and in any case I see no reason why gay blokes should not enjoy fast cars as much as those of us with WAGs in tow.
The point is you do need a decent visor to keep the sun out of your eyes. In the end I went for an upmarket baseball cap - no crass corporate logos, just a plain colour. If one is feeling particularly devilish I suppose it could be worn back to front...

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo... Not a suitable style for anyone above the age of 14 (at a stretch).
Except when you're Flavio Briatore. Apparently.
