My Chim is Whining!!!
Discussion
Last week a whining noise started rearing it's ugly head from the rear end of my beloved Chim!!
I reckon it's coming from the diff. The whine gets higher in pitch the faster I go and is there regardless of what gear I'm in or whether the clutch is in or out.
OK, I'll try and describe the noise! It's almost like the noise you get in reverse, or like a metro in any gear! Or an angle grinder slowing down.
I need to check the diff oil, but couldn't see anything in the bible about this, can I do it on axle stands (or without!), where is the plug, how full?? etc....
Also, don't know if this is relevant, but, about 2 weeks ago (about 1500 miles ago) I had the UJ and collor/flange replaced due to rear clunking.
Another thing too, I jacked up one side of the rear with one wheel off the ground and with the car handbrake off and out of gear. When I rotated the wheel thats off the ground slowly back and forth (through maybe 30-40 degrees) theres a metalic clunk coming from the diff area, is this normal?
Cheers chaps

p.s. it's a late '95 Chimaera

I don't think it will mate. Think it's just gonna be a bearing or oil leak or something. I'm going to get another runabout car soon, and move back to Wales, and go freelance, so I can't lavesh money on her like she deserves! Instead of doing 2k miles a month!!
She's still running a treat though! So you gonna buy a porker then??

You're keeping tabs...
Yes, I think a Porker's the way forward for me right now. An early 993 -- loads of fun, not too much cost, and solid residuals. No point keeping money in the bank or equities these days so I might as well spend it and enjoy it.
And maybe bung on a sports exhaust to add some aural accompaniment...

Danny - it may be the diff bearings, mine got all overheated and yukky inside and needed rebuilding. I also needed a new crown wheel and pinion due to a hairline crack that caused nasty juddering on takoff when hot. My car has done 50k and I don't spin the wheels much so it can happen ...
Can't comment on the noise you got when jacked up, but the LSD should be doing something I guess ... don't know what it would sound like in that situation though.
BTW - diff bearings are not too expensive. A new diff is a problem though - the diff in our cars is not available any longer. You have to convert to the newer diff or hydratrak.

I called into Tops cats yesterday on the way to west Wales and they confirmed that it was the input bearing on the diff. On my journey afterwards though, it got quite a bit louder. I've got the juddering you describe to.
So does this mean I need a new Crown and pinion to?? Are they still available for the GKN diff, or is it just the housing thats unavailable anymore.
Gonna put it in this week to get sorted anyway, my god, more time without my baby
, what'll i do. . . . . . Oh well
it is then!!!
