do they check to see if you have a garage?

Sounds like you're a bit of a gambler. They won't check until you make a theft claim. The garage requirement is for theft protection. So, your car is stolen from your home. Your insurance claim says the car was taken from the road outside your home, insurance void. Or your insurance claim says the car was taken from your fictitious garage but the police report doesn't appear to agree, fraud and insurance claim void.

Is this a question or a statement? Are you saying you have a garage for overnight use?

What happens if it is garaged for 360 nights of the year and for the odd few it is left outside ?? Surely they can't say it must be garaged EVERY night of the year ??

They can and often do. My insurance states that if the car is within X000 meters of my house it must be put in the garage overnight. This is to allow people to take their car on holiday, etc., without breaking contract.

I had to send a picture of the garage with the car in it to Hagerty so yes you do...

I also had to send a picture to Hagerty of car in garage which is fine with me if it keeps their policy prices so competative. I saved over £200 this year so more than happy to comply to their conditions

so if you want to go to friends 20 miles down the road and stay the night ie;leave the car on the road for one night,do they allow this?

My insurance states
"Loss and/or damage to your car caused directly by theft, attempted theft or malicious damage between the hours of 10pm and 7am unless your car is kept in a locked and secured building and your car is a) at your private dwelling place or b)at any other address specifically agreed with us.
This only applies if your car is within half a mile radius of a) or b)

The way I understand this is if it's not in the garage by 10pm it not insured against theft of damaged but only if its stolen or damaged within 1/2 mile from my home.

Yes they do. In fact some policies state that if the car is at your home address and not garaged after 10pm, it is not insured.
