Call me thick as a brick but...........

I've done a weekly check this week on my fluid levels (note to self they both need emptying)and noticed the oil level is down. There is a small leak from the sump, about 5 mils/night, which needs sorting at the next service. So I look up the oil grade in the manual and it recommends Mobil 5/50W.

No probs methinks, just check on what the fellow PH-ers are doing and all hell broke loose . Every time I look at the archives someone is recommending different oil types and viscosities !!! Come on guys is there, (we should have a voting system methinks) a definitive recommendations for oil in the RV8 engine, just for the books mine is a 2000 4 litre...........

In the absence of a willing woman, some tissues and a copy of Razzle will usually suffice.

Firstly, find out from the last servicer, what oil was used.
Secondly, use a good fully synthetic lubricant such as Magnatec 10/40.

If you can find Mobil 1 5w50 then use it if you want. Depending on how hot your car runs, how much the oil pressure drops, how much you value your internals ... you will be entitled to consider alternate products, which is why you see such varied discussions. Some different brands of oil (of the same weights) do not perform similarly when stressed in my experience. Usage pattern and oil spec/brand will dictate what you need - by all means start with the factory rec - or use whatever your service'er did/will refill with..
