Quite strange cut out on the way home today. Cruising along quite happily, then got to a junction, slowed down, foot down, no power at all. Pulled over to the side of the road and the engine cut out. Tried restarting after about 10 seconds - fired up then died straight away. Waited another 30 seconds and tried again, started straight up and drove the rest of the way home no problems.

Any ideas???

Hi

It may be a faulty fuel relay or maybe just a poor connection - try swapping over the two Bosche relays in the footwell and ensure they are well connected.

A fuel pump relay on the way out can cause those symptoms, although they usually seem to need several minutes cooling down rather than firing up OK straight away. The fuel pump relay is one of two metal cased Bosch relays on flying leads by the ECU.

I had this problem a few years back. It was the Ignition Module.

Same symptoms as yours. Car would be fine, then after about 20-30 minutes, the car would splutter a bit, and then cut out. It would turnover and fire up for about half a second then die. But leaving it 5-10 minutes, everything would be fine again.

I suspect that when the Ignition Module begins to fail, it can become problematic once it gets hot, ie after about 20-30 minutes, but once it cools down again, it behaves as normal. It's really easy to fit, but the part isn't cheap IIRC. A fellow PHer had one spare and sent it to me which i was really grateful for and it happened to cure the problem.

Below are some links to posts on my blog which you might find useful too, relating to my problems...

Thanks guys. Interestingly I was rooting around in the footwell the other day trying to figure out how to fit a Tuscan-style boost lead thingy, so maybe I disturbed something. Will check it all out. Am off to Castle Combe tomorrow so we'll see how it goes.
