Bouncey Rear End..........
Discussion
I have a feeling my rear end is a little soft and could be a lot firmer. Over a bumpy road the car will go into a continous bumpy up and down sea sick sort of motion. When the boot was open my father put both hands on the boot lip and bounced the car up and down quite easily. I would have thought that you should be able to shove the car down but it would be fairly difficult to keep it 'bouncing' in this way ?? Does this sound a little soft ?? I know i've got adjustable shocks but I haven't had time to fiddle with them yet, they also look a little rusty so might be tricky to move. If I manage to move them how many clicks is the 'norm' ?? They are AVOs I believe.
No. definitely shouldn't do that. The rebound should be a lot slower than the downwards movement.
AVOs have about 16 clicks if memory serves me right. If you can get them to move then I suggest you click it fully soft and count how many clicks to find out where you were, then click it fully hard to see how many clicks you have to play with, then adjust away.
And no, i cannot for the life of me remember which way is soft and which firm

You just can't resist some good banter with a more sophisticated bunch of fellas
I was referring to Burriana's comment in my thread questioning your so called infrequent attendence in this forum.....proved him wrong then
No you haven't coz i'm not gonna post on your thread
Having examined my soft rear end a little more closely I can tell you the following -
I can 'bounce' the car quite easily and repeatedly with one hand, I managed to move one of the adjusters with the help of a pair of mole grips and after moving it anti clockwise for a while managed to continually turn it with my fingers, no noticeable 'click' feelings just turned and turned and turned. Bounces at what seems like the same rate.
Does this mean that they are well and truely f*cked ?? What are the symptoms of knackered shock absorbers ?? Purely no resistance in them ??
Are AVOs gas filled or fluid filled as there is no sign of any fluid having leaked.....

If the adjusters are not working, borrow some bilsteins from some friendly soul on these forums and send the Avo's back to the factory in Northampton for a rebuild. About £30 each I think.
Thanks - good idea !!
The fronts have recently been replaced with new Bilsteins and springs, is it worth mucking around with old AVOs or should I just go the whole hog and find some Bilsteins ?? Can you mix shocks or is it not advisable ??

IMHO the rear suspension on all Tivs is the more critical than the front and getting the right spring/damper combination is important, I don't have a problem with mixing shocks for the above reason.
I can't comment on the new revalved Billys because I haven't been asked to set up a car yet but Avo, Protech and Gaz all seem to have somewhere close to the right combination and I would be tempted to stick with the Avo for cost reasons.
Can I advise you to get the geometry looked at after you have finished.
