Ive been trying to sort an electrical problems with my lights they do the following:-

With the ignition off:
I get Sidelights, Normal lights and main beam but no dash lights, when I push the switch under the dash all the lights go out.
And also the Main beam (flash) does not work.

Now with the ignition
I get dash if i press the switch under the dash. side lights but no main lights, but now the main beam (flash) works.

I have checked all the fuses and replaced all the relays.

Im running out of idears I have thought maybe an earth ? Where are the earthing points on the car?

If anyone has any idears chuck them at me its worth a try I need to sort asap.

Thanks

Sounds like your wiring is foocked ie dash light switch in front of light switch rather than the other way round or something of the kind. Do you have the 2 push buttons to switch the lights on or have you got a twisty knob?

I prob have a wiring diag of the earlier switch arrangement.

From memory the earth points at the front are at the bottom chassis mount right under the radiator. The other earth point is the chassis mount on the transmission tunnel, which could be at fault causing the relay to behave funny.

Swap both the light relays with the horn one just to make sure they are the correct type & working.

The earthing seems to vary... Battery is earthed on transmission tunnel as Iain said, sometimes I think a lead goes off this as well for the dash but others seem to wind their way down the steering column IIRC (or is it that strange thing on the diagonal to the outrigger at the back of the wheelarch?) Would have thought an earth problem anywhere in those areas would cause other major symptoms to be seen as well though.

Chaffing or shorting behind the fusebox could do anything...but I cant see the relevance of the dash illumination switch ~ have been sniffing a lot of paint today tho yikes

Ok, ive had a look at the dash light switch and it has 4 connectors and only 2 wires on it. Is this correct?

Also there are 4 numbers on the switch does it matter where these go as they may be wrong as ive disconnected the switch now.

The 4 blades form 2 separate switches (Thats the Double Pole meaning when the switch is described BTW) You need to reconnect the correct pairs.

Does disconnecting it affect any of your symptoms (might as well try)

Put 1 wire on anywhere, the other will not work on the diagonally opposite - so you only have 2 possibilities. Simple..
