All,

I have recently aquired one of these magnificent beasts and am wondering how smoth the engine should sound? When accelerating gently upto around 3000 rpm I can her a ticking type noise... Recntly just filled up with 99 RON unleaded so am running the right Octane.. Sounds a little bit like a blown exhaust manifold but because I've never owned a TVR before I wasn't sure if its normal?

Any help/opinions would be appreciated. I don't really want to take it to a garage to be told that "they all do that sir!".

Cheers

You may have answered your own question. They don't "all do that sir" any more than any other car odes it. Manifold gaskets perishing is quite a common occurence.

Doesnt sound like anything to worry about if its not affecting driving the car...?

worst case...worn camshaft?
best case...slight exhaust leak...try nipping up the manifold nuts.
in between...tappets? an ancillary item...?

Hope this helps...when you are doing od jobs on the car just keep checking over odd bits and bobs and you might find something...most of all, enjoy!

Methods of checking for blown exhaust gasket vary from simple feather thru piece of pipe held to ear to stethoscope. Copious deposits can be a visual telltale tho Dont leave it - blow can damage the mating surface & the heads are quite expensive items.

Thanks,

Doesn't appear to affect the driving of the car, performance seems ok and there isn't any form of a misfire...

I am not technical in any way, shape or form so would it be ok to go to a reputable local garage for them to check it over or would you recommend taking it to an Indie?

Could be a multitued of things! As you know I have the same ticking noise but it comes and goes, so I took it to David Geralds yesterday and it didn't do it at all!! Law of sod I suppose, but they reckoned on a sticky lifter being the most likely problem which could have been on account of the thinner oil Leven's put in when they serviced it in January. It was pointed out by Leven's then that I may have a sticky lifter as they could hear a very slight ticking.....sounded OK to me but I suppose they have a trained ear!

Anyway if it returns or worsens then I'll do an oil change to a thicker one - Mobil 1 Motorsport according to the Bible.

If it is a continuous ticking then your problem may be an exhaust manifold gasket which let's hope it is cos' that's the inexpensive option. Go and get it looked at by a reputable TVR garage yes

Take it to your local dealer or indie rather than just a garage if you can, unless you know someone you trust. Get along to your local TVRCC meeting and speak to the guys there, they will be able to either help themselves or recommend someone.

Trying to find an exhaust leak is difficult because the area is both hot and noisy.

Follow this link to my method. Below the photos of rubber pipe and rubber bungs shoved in my tailpipes there's a link to a short description of the method.

Thanks, will have a look tonight.

Failing that, will pop into the TVR centre in Barnet for them to have a listen...

Is that going to be an expensive job? If so I feel hurt that you're laughing at my misfortune! ;-)

Not at all. If it's manifold you can choose to just live with it, I have. My left bank has been leaking where the four pipes go into one for over a year now. I'll get around to it some day but it's doing no harm, just causes a small drop in power.

Well, took it to TVR Barnet (Excellent service a nice people) to find out that I was worrying about nothing - Phew!!! According to the mechanic (Lee) who came out with his stethascope (probably not spely right) all manifold gaskets fit like a glove with only one blowing very slightly - said it won't affect performace that I'll notice and that there isn't really any point changing it now as it could last another 10 years or it could go tomorrow - plus its the manifold that leads to the CAT so could be expensive BOOO!

But now I know its running sweet as a nut I gave it a bloody good spanking on the way home and loved every minute of it - even blew an Elise out of the water off the lights!!

God I love my Chim!!!

Mine does the same but I can only hear it at around 3000 with the roof off. It sounds like the tappets dont have enough oil in them, but oil level is fine. Going to change for silkolene 10/50 and see if it helps.

My ticking comes and goes, usually hear it at lower revs and the popular consensus is a sticky lifter in the RH bank and that the Shell Helix Ultra 5W/40 is a little thin for the RV8, but as the sticking comes and goes I am loathed to change the oil so soon after it has just been put in. If the ticking returns and stays I may try the Wynnes 'Sticking Hydraulic lifter' additive to see if that works. I've been told that it won't affect the oil. If that doesn't work then it's a change to Mobil 1 motorsport 10/50 to see if that helps.

RumbleBee - is the Silkolene cheaper than the Mobil 1?
