Mine was just going when I bought it and then virtually blew out the first time I went for a drive with the top in 'Targa' configuration.
Once it starts to go all the thread is on it's last legs. The whole hood really has to come off and have the rear screen re-sewn in by machine. You probably also need to replace the narrow fabric trim round the inside of the window.
The later cars, with three bolts thorugh the trim just below the window are easier to fix because the hoods come off more easily.
All this comes from the guy who fixed mine and charged me just under £250 for the service.

I tried this myself with a sewing awl. It has a reel for thread (I used a waxed black, heavy duty thread) built in to the handle. I replaced the needle with a finer one from a sewing machine which didn't make such a mess of the hood.
Noticed today that some of the stitching around my rear screen has come away.
Anyone had a go at fixing this themselves?
I guess a waterproof heavy-duty thread should be OK?
It did the job but was a pain to do. Took a long time and broke several needles!! As I needed a quick fix it was OK but I plan to get the rear screen replaced professionally at some stage.
This was a useful discussion... and had some info on someone in Leicester (so not too far from MK).

Some of the stitching came away on my rear screen which I repaired myself. There was about a 10 inch section in the corner of the screen that was coming away. I think this is probably the area where most stress occurs when you fold down the window.
All I did was purchase some darning needles and thread (the thick stuff!) and a thimble. You also have to do a back stitch, but once you have mastered it, it is quite easy. Do take your time when you do it though to get the stitching to look right.
Jamie.

I too repaired about a foot of stiching. I got some thread from a shoe repair place, black thick waxed stuff. Fairly hefty needle and some needle nose pliers worked OK. Quite time consuming and not the neatest job in the world. Ironically, the window got replaced shortly afterwards when I pranged the car. Apparently the rest of the stiching left go when they took the roof off to do the respray.
Brian, just had mine done by a guy called Joe @ Unique Trimming 01372 363448.
Took the car to him, he took the hood off disappeared for about an hour to his workshop had re-stitched the 'open' piece which was about 14 inches long and also ran a stitch round the whole window. Then put the hood back on for me
£40- good job.
