What Price Chimaera Race Car
Discussion
Can any one give any advice on a realistic price for my Chimaera race car. I have had it up for some time and not much interest. Its a shame to sell it but I have another race car. I'm not pulling a fast one I'm genuinely interested in what fellow ph'ds think it is worth and what I should put it up for. Would an MOT make it more saleable? Engine has been dynoed at 180 bhp at wheels is that about right?
Details are:
TVR Chimaera race car. Rebuilt low mileage (5,000 miles) 400 engine with uprated chip, cam and head work. Fully stripped out interior with rollcentre cage. Converted in 2002 and was racing in roadsports and local BARC series. Leda fully adjustable suspension with uprated AP brakes on front. Stack dash. Fully road legal and I have the V5 available. The car is not MOT'd but is road legal. Original service book, service history (UP TO RACE CAR CONVERSION)) and vehicle handbook available. The vehicle has just had a complete respray in the original TVR colour.

I spent a while looking at Tasmins last year with a view to buying an ex-Tuscan Challenge one to run as a sprint car. The amount of money that had been spent on these cars, as compared to what was being asked would make you weep. And they still weren't selling until the price came down more ....
This really is quite an interesting one. It has obviously to be a case of supply and demand and I suspect that the market for a modified car like that is fairly small. You just need to find the person who wants it. There is also a well known Griff with a roll cage fitted and other mods advertised and it will interesting to see if that sells. The very reasonably priced and well speced wedges that were offered didn’t seem to readily find buyers
Race cars do seem to be challenging to sell and even when they have been campaigned successfully they often hang around for years. I suspect it is not really a case of cost more a case of finding the right person. Perhaps you are advertising in the wrong places. May be your target should be in the paddock at a TVR club speed event.

Hi Steve, what you're asking for that Chimmy is criminal given the cost to prep a race car, it makes me weep to think that I'd struggle to recover the purchase price of the road car I prepped if I was to ever sell my racer. Sadly there are a limited number of people wanting what is after all a fairly specialist car, there have been several Tasmin racers for sale over the winter and only one sold.
All I can say is sit tight, the Tuscan/TVRCC series is growing and growing and hopefully if people get their act together and give us a set of watertight regs for 2008 sooner rather than later (i.e. this summer, not mutterings and rumours until several races into the season) it will encourage people to get out there and race.
Regards
Iain

I think what people have said is right. Its not the price its just the size of the market. If you want to go racing Then your car represents fantastic value for money at even 10k never mind the 7ish you have it up for. you could probably take another couple of grand off the price and it wouldnt make much difference to the number of people that would buy it.
The best bet if you can afford to is to stick to the price you want and sell it when a customer comes along. As Iain has said the TVR/Tuscan challenge is building into a sustainable series now so that should increase the market.
A mate of mine has just sold his championship winning mg midget after about a year of having it for sale. Just as he'd decided to keep it along comes a buyer who looks at it doesnt haggle and offers the asking price straight away, after months of hand wringers haggling and then not buying...
I've mentioned your car to a few people looking around so fingers crossed...
Although if you still have it in August your really should bring it to rockingham for the tvr 60th Birthday and race it, heck you could even stick a forsale sign on it ;-)
Good Luck

Edited to say ( 3 tasmins sold over the winter...plus a couple of tuscans)

Guys
thanks for all the support and encouragement. It ulmost makes me want to race it myself, but...............I can only commit to one race series and that's the Tiger race series this year. I'll stick with the price and see if an ad in this weeks autosport helps. Steve

<LOL> you should still bring it out for just the one ( well 2 its a double header) at Rockingham, if you havent sold it by then.
Good luck

Personally this is where i would be selling the car, i would just take it along on the trailer to one of the meetings with a for sale board on it, although it is for sale here on pistonheads, there are still thousands of people that havent heard of piston heads and you might just get a guy at the meeting watching the racing and fances a go, i have sold all my race cars at meetings either driving or just sitting there in the car park!
