when this happened to me it was a suspected sticking brush in the alternator(aa mans diagnosis),my light would stay on for a while sometimes and other times it would go out on start up.so i had a re-con one fitted and all was ok.you can apply french chalk to see if it stops happening due to belt slip,but if belt looks good then its unlikely to be the case if its self tensioning-do you have a serp engine?in any case its best to eliminate the belt first by replacement if necesary,before going to the expense of a new alternator.

Yeah, the fuse link killed my battery at Easter in a service station on the M6.
The red dash light had been flickering, whenever there was load on the battery, for months but running a meter over the alternator & battery showed both were fine.
Turned out the casing around the link had been deteriorating and had finally packed up. AA man crawled underneath, removed it and after cleaning and replacing it, the battery only took 20 mins to charge after a booster start.
It sits next to the starter motor on the lead from the alt to the battery btw.
I've just had my 100A fuse link changed. Second time in a year and a half. My symptoms were alternator light staying on, but going off when revved, also the oil pressure guage underread by 15psi, finally the engine was being cranked slower by the starter motor.
Took it down to my local friendly garage who put it on their ramp. The fuse was cracked down the middle which they changed for free. Spent more time going up and down on the ramp than actually took fixing the problem. :-/
I now carry this as a spare.
