Any half decent welder should be more than competant to restore the chassis.

Once you have stripped everything off it is only made up of tube and box section. Just dont cut out too much at any one time as this will lose the rigidity of the chassis and the potential to twist/distrot will increase.

If you cant use a welding set, and i mean use it properly (if a pig had arms it could weld), then this is a job best left to someone else.

I am in the process of restoring my chassis before the body goes back on.
So far i have changed the outriggers. straightened one of the top tubes, replaced one of the top tube sections around the wishbone mount, replaced some of the plates at the end of the box section for body mounting bolts and created more earth points.

It is off to the blasters this week for shotblasting, hot zinc spraying and then powder coating....cost = £130
Time spent on chassis has been about 15-20 hrs work.

Not sure if this will help but it will give you a rough idea of how long it takes to do the work.

It's not possible to hot zinc spray then powder coat...the zinc process still remains a coating which is porous and holds a lot of air, it requires a wet sealer/primer to complete the process, powder-coating does not do this, any the finish zinc coating and the air within it try to escape whilst being heating during the dry powder process and the surface finish is not the sealed and both coatings will just lift and part company from the meatlwork.

So is it a good idea to have it hot Zinc sprayed? if so is it better to cover it in POR15? if not then what else is best. I am behind Andy and about to tke the body off over the next week or so and then off for the welding work etc.

Well i dont know what your background is so i cant really comment....all i know is the place that is doing my chassis has been running for a long time and they certainly seem to know their stuff.

About 15 years ago and had the same treatment doen to an old 1964 lambretta and the finish was good enough for it to win trophys at custom shows.

Also i was a welde fabricator for a number of years and very often we would powdercoat handrails and ballaustrades after they had been zinc sprayed???

I have taken your comments on board and shall certainly query the coaters...!!!

Cheers thumbup

It's what I do for a living ...I have OWNED 50 odd TVR's all restored by me and most likley 50+ customer cars, own 7 now, I restore TVR's and only TVR's to concors winning condition and have used every process that the world of refinishing has to offer over the last 30 years, The hot zinc process works with Zinc/wet primer sealer/ and wet finish, add another hot process and the oxides/air/zinc in the first process balls up and tries to surface, leaving the metal exposed.

adrian, so what is the best coating to over the hot zinc spray? as I only want to do it once and have it last forever. I assume that the spry is the best coating to go staright onto the metal.

I do not have the product name of the zinc sealer finish and the primer used once the hot zinc is on, but this then enables you to finish the chassis in what ever you wish, recently I have done chassis to that finish for customers to POR15 and black water based chassis paint. I use Trimite industrial paints in BS colours to suit/match with the powder coated items/wishbones etc.

Galvanising seems to be a load of poo where water is trapped against it anyway IMHO.
My rusty galvanised hozelock reel reminds me of this every morning confused
