Jumping out of 5th

Hi all,
New weekend, new problem. I put the car in 5th, release the clutch and 'grind/crunch' it pops out again. If I hold it in gear when I let the clutch out all is ok, also it may be that when I shove it firmly in, let go of the lever and then release the clutch all may be well but I have only had the chance to try it a couple of times so far.
Any ideas? I know that the linkage bushes are a little worn but could it be as simple as that or am I looking at serious gearbox work?

This is not linkage related it's sincromesh. There’s a ring gear sometimes called the bauke ring that is made of brass and can wear. These rings are thrown into place by a combination of gear activity and oil flow. When worn they will cause their associated gear to jump out when the clutch is depressed. Firstly, have you changed the oil recently? If so it’s worth knowing that thicker oil can show the same symptoms because the oil gets trapped between the ring and shaft and stops the ring engaging.

The proper oil for the Chimaera gearbox is expensive, thin and red. It's actually automatic transmision fluid.
If the car was serviced by a non-dealer and filled with normal oil (cheap, thick and brown!) it could cause this.
Not sure how handy you are but it's quite easy to take the side plug out of the gearbox and see if the oil is red or not.

It could well be a linkage problem, if the gears are not being moved enough inside the box they can pop back out, I think that is more likely than syncro going on fifth. It could also be excess wear inside the box, which would be bad news. Cannot see how depressing the clutch will make a gear jump out, the box is not connected at that point. The wrong oil can affect the way the syncro works, noise, frothing up etc but unlikely it will have anything to do with a gear coming out.

Guess we disagree here, I speak from experience. This gear jumping has happened to me twice now and on both occasions it was a worn bauke gear. My understanding is that the final action of this gear is to lock your selected gear in place, hence they disengage easily when drive isn't applied.
