Second question of the day from me(must be something in the water). I've been speaking to my TVR mechanic about getting a brake upgrade and he has come back with a price of 400 quid for all four corners (before labour). Not knowing a massive amount about this area, does this sound like a reasonable price or could i purchase them cheaper and just get him to fit them?

What does this include though ?? New discs & pads ?? New calipers ?? New bigger discs and calipers ?? Just new pads all round ?? Totally depends on what he is supplying and fitting........

As Simon said - what is actually being done? For £400 you'd expect new calipers and bigger front discs at least - though many say the rears should be left alone.
For £280 I replaced all 4 discs with grooved and put on fast road pads all round.

right, they would be cross drilled and grooved with competition pads fitted. Apprently hand made (the discs). Sounds like it would be the same calipers. Sounds similar to what you did zippee....

Lots of horror stories on here about drilled disks. I would only want grooved after reading some of them.

Get in touch with Ricerocket, 3G 10 grooved(Brembo) disks and red stuff pads all round for a lot less than that.

£400 for parts BEFORE labour - I'm presuming he's using Tarox or similar then? Thats a lot of money just for discs and pads! Personally I've also heard too mamny horror stories about drilled discs and would only use grooved.

While you brake guys are here, can you just confirm for me if there is a difference in the front calipers used on the 4.x and 500 cars.
I thought there was as I've seen upgrades for 4.x cars using the 500 calipers, but a guy on ebay selling a pair of calipers told me they were all the same.

Personally I'd say spend more, upgrade the hubs etc as well, so you can then add proper TVR AP racing items. But that is a lot more...

afaik there is no difference between 400 and 500s after about 97. Prior to that the 400s had 240mm front discs and non-vented rears whereas post 97 the 400s were given the brake set-up from the 500s ie/ 260 mm front discs and vented rears.

£400 for discs and pads is steep

I changed all four discs on mine for around £120 for drilled and grooved discs, and pads were about another £60. They're not very big and they're only ford items, after all.

I have recently fitted hand-finished TAROX 260mm drilled discs and Cermaic pads for £200 - a good interim upgrade before messing with callipers & bigger discs. Rear vented discs require little upgrade to maintain brake bias

It means if you uprate the rears you reintroduce the bias too much towards the rear of the car which allows an braking oversteer bias not the preferrred understeer brake bias (mainly on track)which seems to be the preference to motorsport TIV's

So in simple english you were saying is that its not really worth upgrading the rears.. It's just your sentence ended up as gobbledygook in my head hehe
