There's lots of threads on here about starter motors failing when the engine's hot. Mine did and I was advised to buy a new one at £145 exc VAT.

Anyway, I decided it wasn't going to cost more if I broke the old one first, so in two nights of swearing and bleeding I took the old one apart, cleaned everything, greased the solenoid cylinder with the thinnest possible film of copperlube and put it back.

It worked (!) and after three weeks it still does, even when hot. This is the final test... by Sod's law, if it still works after this posting it's fixed for ever!

BTW, I'd never have managed to dismantle it without the thirty year old impact screwdriver from my motorbike days!

If it packs up again you can get the solenoid on its own for about £25

Thanks Elwood, I'll remember that. It just goes to show that there are cheaper ways to do things if the budget is a limitation.

I've done 12 months or more on the same fix.

same happened to me, was told I needed a new starter motor due to overheating but after being checked over by a local motor rewinding firm ( the starter not me !) discovered that it was clutch dust clogging up the solenoid pinion mech ,gave the impression of a totaly dead starter motor, after cleaning everything back to normal.

Cost ? Three knuckles and a broken ratchet drive trying to get the damm thing off !
