Yes!

With the Tom Tom mounted centrally on the windscreen run the cable directly from the back of the TT towards the windscreen. About an inch or two from the windscreeen tuck the lead into the where the 'dash-top' joins the windscreen screen 'valance' as both are soft. You can then run the wire along this join all the way to the drivers door tucking it in as you go round.

Hey presto - no showing wires!

Its a 2 second jobbie which tidies it all up.

Yep, loads of times. Wonder if the preceeding tip makes things worse? Guess I'll see next warm day.

Yep - charge it up in advance - no need for wires for any trip <2 hours (which is going to be most)

I have an Ipaq with TomTom installed. It fits perfectly on the right side of the screen, must be smaller profile than the tomtom unit.

That's how my tom tom is set up, and it keeps it out of the way of your feet to by running it from the dash in line with the door, it makes it harder to snag.

is there a tomtom with traffic info on it?

so rarely would i find gps guidance useful that i'd want traffic warnings (preferably with re-routing) to make it worthwhile.. currently i use an "inforad" gps based camera detector with 3 leds (wired as above - along windscreen!)

I use a Garmin device, but why not just plug it into the cigarette lighter socket under the dash on the passenger side?

The battery charger?

Does this mean you only use the Tom Tom when you are in the garage?

Yes, but you pay extra for the traffic service. In fact my Tom Tom occasionally presents me with a 'Tip' which reminds me of this service. Irritating when you are trying to program a route.

Particularly irritating given that it is the only 'Tip' on the system, and is in fact actually an advert, and there doesn't appear to be a way of turning it off apart from forking out the dosh.

If you drive a fair bit, why would you not find gps guidance useful?

How did you make that??

I'm about 100 miles from my Chimaera at the moment, so can't check, but if there was a socket there as standard I feel sure I'd have spotted it!

Yep, and I've never been lost in there once!

no, I use the lead which is connected to the battery, to which the charger connects

Well, 99% of the time I'm driving to places I've been to many times before, and a glowing screen would just be a distraction. The other 1% I find a map usually does the job, but a couple of times it would have been useful were trying to find the well-hidden motorail terminal in Dusseldorf and trying to find the right gate into Siena - even Florence was a doddle with a map. Did borrow a Navman once but it sent me into a field somewhere in France (rather than the hotel which I was hoping for!)

However as I drive to & from Dorset every week it would be handy to have a warning of traffic jams, which are pretty frequent on the M27/M3 in the summer

agreed, although does add a trip hazard. Something else to think about when entering the car, as well as wacking your chin on the exposed door frame if the window is down !

yep, done that. only once though. difficult to carry on as normal when your chin is bleeding.

confused

How on earth did you trip over it? There isn't enough lead left to trip over once you've tucked it all in. If anything, opening the door stretches the lead and makes it pop out of the cigarette lighter socket.

Ok, so I cheated, it isn't a standard fitting (but I wonder how many people went out to check?). It's pretty easy to fit as there's a void behind the panel. And it shouldn't upset the purists too much as it's not visible unless your head's under the dash!
