Ive been toying with the idea of upgrading the Cam on my 500, to gain a bit more torque, any info on the following would be much appreciated :- (apologies that its a bit matter of fact!)

Stealth Cam
- What would be the % torque/power increase from a stealth Cam?
- Are they are any other changes (ECU) that are required?
- Where can they be ordered from and would any dealer be able to fit?
- What is the effect of low speed driving - use the car everyday in traffic, so if it becomes uncomfortably lumpy, shall stick with original Cam.
- Increased fuel consumption?

Taraka upgrade
- Same as above!! - Heard that it gives blistering acceleration?? I reckon at present, Id being doing well to get under 5s 0-60.

.. or hang on for a S'Charger?

Many Thanks,

Karl.

Karl,
Some info for you. I have a 5.0 litre Taraka conversion and at the TVR Power open day last Saturday, I had 260HP and 268lb/ft at the wheels. This was a 40HP increase over a standard 5.0 litre, as I viewed at least another 3 standard cars on the dyno. Whether the figures are accurate or not is irrelevant to me but the back to back comparison of standard to modified cars is of more value. Also, my car still has a standard 5.0l chip and was seriously under fueling at the top end, so would probably deliver more power when sorted. Interestingly, the torque levels were all pretty much the same, whether 4.0 litre, 4.5 or 5.0 at around the 265ish mark.

Are you saying a 4.0 has similar torque levels to a 5.0 - can't be?

Sorry, meant to say 4.3, 4.5 and 5.0. Can't remember what the 4.0's were but I was surprised that the torque outputs were so close.

Were those figures at the fly or at the wheels? I know Quinny's 5l Griff makes around 290 at the fly running a Stealth. Only been in his car once but was mighty impressed

A 4l can (fairly easily) make 243hp@5400rpm against 267lb/ft@3300rpm. By easily I mean carefully built with a Real Steel Typhoon cam, bulleted guides (no porting or polishing of the heads) and a CRE chip, if it wasnt for the paddle clutch there would be no issues driving the car round town either; so I wouldn't be suprised if there was the potential for more out of some of the larger capacity engines out there.

Iain

Thanks for the info guys. I Note that you say with the Taraka, that there was little change in Torque, so I guess acceleration didnt differ too much? However, I did see a a Taraka 500 set off, and it appeared to go like stink. 40Hp increase is pretty impressive increase. How does it drive at low speed?

Thanks,

Karl.

Karl,
I have a 5 ltr and replaced the cam last year as it was on its way. Don't know about the stealth but I had a kent Cam 224 fitted by Austec + remapping of ECU by Mark Adams (essential I believe) + minor little updates whilst they were there (inlet manifold trumpets, remove pre-cats etc).
Apart from the fact that the cam was going, I was trying to solve a fuel consumption problem that was giving me 12 - 13 mpg in normal running.

Before the work I was at 266hp and 282lb/ft which was reasonable enough.

After the work I know have 308hp and over 300lb/ft + mpg is up a bit to about 15 running around. I think the mpg increase is mainly down to Mark's ECU set up.
The car is a little more lumpy at low revs (<1800 rpm) but totally drivable. However, the plan is to get the ignition mapped which should smooth this out a bit more + bring the power down the rev range a bit more + maybe improve the mpg if I'm lucky.

I probably have the graphs somewhere showing the before and after results if you mail me offline.

I've done a recorded 4.5sec 0-60 before the Taraka conversion and it is definately quicker with it. low down driveability is a problem though but is probably due to having not had the fueling mapped properly. i got some plug leads off Jamie at Castle Race Engines last year and they helped smooth the low end shunting down quite a bit, more than Magnecors did.

Again thanks for the notes.. Phil Ill drop you a mail, unfortunately I cant get access to my home mail at the minute and my personal mail is blocked at work.. One of the reasons for getting the Cam changed is the car still pinks occasionally when hot and at high revs, I was told that this was down to cam wear? Is the Kent Cam pretty bullet proof against pinking, even when occasionally dropping the octane rating? At the minute this is a definite no, even being sensitive to some of the 97/98 fuels.

My 5 litre Taraka gave 257bhp and 271 lbs.ft at the wheels (at a different rolling road) after the work was done.
A quick telephone call to Dom put estimated transmissions losses at 20%, giving the 320bhp / 340lbs.ft at the fly that I normally now quote for mine.
I get an average 18-19mpg against 20-21mpg before the conversion.

Hi Karl ive got a stealth going in my 450 this week - ive got a upgrade chip going in mine as im doing a few other bits as well, but if i remember correctly you can run a standard ecu set up with the stealth.-you need to speak to v8developments.

It has completely different characteristics: better idle and driveability (is that actually a word? ) torque produced lower down and runs out of puff at 4500 - 5000 revs. MC2 not as smooth but revs more freely. I have an MC2 and I'm thinking about ripping it out and replacing it with a stealth

I have had both stealth and MC2 and the stealth is streets ahead
