My outriggers are'nt rusty in fact at the moment they are quite shiney!!!

Shotblasters tomorrow bounce bounce
Cant wait...as far as i am concerned this is the halfway point...once i have it back i can put everything back onto the chassis...apart from engine...

Seriously, hope your outriggers are not shot...it can be an awkward job if you dont have all the gear and a very expensive job if you dont have the experience and need to get someone else to do it!!!

Here you go :

What you need to do is hit the outrigger with something steel - like a spanner - steel will always ring .. if it just goes thud.. then you know it's just rust !

Also a screw driver will easily push thru rust .. note some owners can find this upsetting .. if it's not you car.

Try it on a good section in the engine bay to know what it sounds like !

Just a safety note - the outrigger is what is stopping another car killing you from a side impact - so do you want to risk it..

Is that the main box section rusted through as well?

and as an addition to the safety note the tube that stops cars hitting you on the outrigger is only about 1.5mm thick.
I know it added some weight (couple of lbs) but i replaced mine with 3mm thick tube...will last forever!!!

About 1 gallon of fuel extra weight wise then Andy, your right i prefer the extra thickness steel.

Thats what i was thinking...i was really surprised how thin the wall thickness was for such a safety critical part of occupant protection.
To be honest though the outrigger sits so low to the ground it is probably lower than most car bumbers so in a side impact an oncomming car will probably ride up over it...cant wait to get it back on the road!!! hehe

Cant work out which shot of the chassis that is...cant think of any of the lower round tubes having mounting lugs like them...?

Is not a better quality of tube available which is stronger anyway, without being thicker or heavier ?

Yes you probably could get the same thickness with stronger properties but i just wanted the tube quickly and it was all they had apart from the thin walled stuff...plus the extra thickness will help it last longer angainst the rust...

True, but it's so low in the car that i would think most other cars would ride and up over the outrigger.

It's from a wedge.. and all wedge chassis are 3mm anyway..

Only newer cars are 1.5mm

I did not think the Griff & Chim chassis was 1.5 mm .. thought that change was fdrom the Cerb onwards..
