Hi Guys, am really trying to decide on either getting a cerbera or a chimaera, am new to the tvr world have loved them for ages la la la la la la I need one.

www.pistonheads.com/sales/151296.h

Looked at this one tonight anybody know anything about it?????????????

It will need a service (How much?)

It could do with a bit of a tidy up on the paint in some areas.

And it would need wax oiling (again how much?)

Last bit is there anybody who would check it over for me if I pay them??????????

Many thanks JULESxxx

Jules,

Waxoyl: I am guessing that at an Indie or dealer it is probably going to be £150+
Service: Based on the Indie I use, The 12K Service will be about £450+ and the 6K service about £350+
Paintwork: Really depends what NEEDS doing!

I would happily have a look at the car for you, but I am otherwise engaged this weekend (horses of the non mechanical kind!)...If you are keen on the car, I would pay a local TVR specialist to examine the car for you (probably cost £150 or so)...the seller should be OK with that - it is really in their interests to do so.

The one thing that is worth noting is the light coloured dash...this would be a negative for me as they can be a real nuisance reflecting the light badly and creating a haze in the windscreen...I have seen people cover thed ash with black cloth to stop the glare and some people clearly live with it...but for me it's a no go...

Hi Owen
Thanks for that, they said that they would drop the price because of the service, or they get it done for the full asking.

But I obviously would feel happier if someone was to look over it as well.

Thanks for the offer and good luck with the horses

Why dont you book the car in for serviceideaand get a full report at the same time of what needs doing, then you can come to some ageement with the owner about splitting the costs of the servicebeer if all goes well you get a service done with your new car and the satisfaction the car is tops and your ready to roll, thats providing the garage gives it the all clear,i cant take credit for this one a guy on here called John said thats what he did, seems like a good idea to me if your not spanners minded.

You could ask Dave or Mark at www.t-v-r-services.co.uk/ to check the car over as it's not too far away - they looked over all of mine before I purchased each one...

Hi Jules,

Welcome to PH.

For an independant inspection, I'd recommend Rob Ingleby (www.findasportscar.co.uk). James Agger is an other option (www.jamesagger.com)

Either way, it is critical that whatever car you chose is inspected prior to parting with your hard earned cash.

Oh and great choice of car, they are truly awesome.

Thanks for that, I went and had a look at a 5 litre one today excellent condition also had a drive in it
(blew me away) fantastic car much better than the one in Rickmansworth.

He is the second owner TVR club member, and a book load of reciepts and service forms including original
owners dets, he bought it for 24K 4 years ago.

A couple of things, when we were on a test drive there was a ticking sound, which came and went, he said that
it has been like that since he has had it, when he had it checked out, they said ther was a hairline crack in
the manifold??????? (sorry not spanners minded) He said he would get it checked out. Also he has kept it
in a garage, it has seen now wet weather and has not benn wax oiled since he has had it, does that sound
normal?????

The last thing does it sound a little over priced???????

Thanks for this, i think i will leave the Rickmansworth one for now. Here is the link for the
5litre monster, sorry about the late, or early post, cant sleep thinking about it

As a guide, my mate (Blueyonder on here) bought a few months ago a very nice 4.0 and he used the "book it in for a service before completing the deal" method. It came through with no major issues and he got a very clean '97 car with the knowledge that it was as sound as it looked.

Ticking and tapping noises are fairly common - typically ticking is more associated with exhaust manifold gasket leaks that are generally not serious unless ignored when they can cause erosion of the port on cylinder head.
The manifold can also crack - typically at a welded joint that may be difficult to see until the manifold is removed and leak tested. Either a cracked manifold or a failed gasket can be relatively easily fixed. If the facing of the cylinder head exhaust port is damaged that's more serious as the head will need to be removed and the port surface ground flat. If what you're hearing is actually a metallic tapping then you need to think about worn valve gear or possible the cam. Or it could be a collection of all of the above - which is also not that uncommon on Chimaeras of this vintage.

Having owned a TVR for 4 years, driven it regularly (obviously not when it was raining rolleyes and never having the chassis attended to with waxoyl etc is more worrying. The chassis outriggers especially are prone to rust and this would be a major point for careful inspection by someone who knows what they are looking for. You really don't want to find that you need the body off to replace rusted parts of the chassis.

As to the price it's difficult to say it's overpriced without ticking off all the concerns - but this would have to be a minter in every aspect to sell at this price - IMHO.

I did exactly the same with mine. I called the garage, agreed to pay their fixed service amount and the seller agreed to cover any issues on a set list of things to look for - chassis, leaks, cam wear etc etc.

True yes

Was also advised of a slight ticking in the right bank and it was suggested that it was a sticking lifter which should free up with use. It comes and goes but the last 2 occasions I took it out (including today) the ticking wasn't there. Just shows how the RV8 engine prefers to be used as opposed to sitting in a garage. The last owner only put around 1,000 miles in a year! Also was advised of worn discs and brake pads...not urgent but will get them done soon.

Other than that, a great car!

Good luck with your search Jules!

It was Leven's who inspected mine(they were close to the seller). If Simon has looked after the car then he will be aware of it's history. Give him a ring...was very happy with Simon, very enthusiastic and knows his stuff. If I didn't live so far away I would happily continue to use Leven.
