Roof few off on motorway
Discussion
Was on the M4 last night and the roof flew off. Bizaarly it vanished! I checked up and down both carridge ways, but nothing. Checked the hardshoulder both sides and verge and nothing! Its a bit big to disappear, but couldn't find it anywhere.
Does anyone know if you can get replacements?

I had this happen to me on the A46 near Stratford some years ago!
Fortunately it belonged to the company and was our loan car so no damage to a customers car but it completely disappeared! Hunted for a good few miles (on foot) either side of the road and just no sign of it anywhere!
I know I was slightly over the limit but it was a big shock!

I just don't understand how such a heavy item could fly so far away that I couldn't find it. It was still daylight, so I could see in amoungst the tree etc, but nothing.
Was around Jnc 32, so thought it might have drop to the dual carraige way below, but nothing there either.
My roof must have been related to Lord Lucan.

It does happen if the panel is not located correctly and/or the struts are not pushed back into position. The retaining lugs can also wear so that with a bit of flexing and a bit of suction from the air flow, they can slip out of the socket and voila the roof goes flying. It is rare though.
Dave at Tower View has had some new lugs made that are a bit longer IIRC and are a better fit.

Call me dim or
but what are these "retaining lugs"? My roof has channels front and back but no lugs.Gassing Station | Chimaera | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
